I have just returned from the shed after struggling to remove a drive shaft from the CV joint. I have done it before by holding the drive shaft with drum and hug attached and giving the end of the shaft a sharp whack with a hammer. This time they did not want to come apart after half a dozen blows with a mini sledge hammer. I did not try any more for fear of damaging the splines on the end I was hitting. What next? Put the shaft in a vice and hit the CV off the end with a bigger hammer and a lump of axle as a drift? They have been together since 1965, so are well and truly stuck. Cheers.

CV out of the hub?

I've never had a problem holding the driveshaft and knocking the CV off.

Sometimes the C clip in the shaft just pokes out a little too far out of it's cut slot in the shaft, then when you go to remove it as you have, instead of retracting, it jams up between the CV and the drive shaft. Usually there ain't much that can be done other than to keep banging away at it until the C clip shears and then the CV will come off.

As you suggested hold the shaft in a good vice, and whilst holding the cv joint so it doesn't fly off and break your foot, give it a nice strong hit with a quality hammer. If it doesn't come off its because you need lessons in the use of hammers :D

Also, don't keep hitting in the same spot. If it don't move after a couple of hits try it 180° around.
I use ye olde brickies club hammer. 8)
Watch yer toes... gravity is a bugger when it lets go.

My usual technique is stand with your legs open on grass... Soft landing if you need to reuse the CV.

what GT mowog said and drmini said.

I have had some real PITA ones,, its just because it gets stuck..

A little trick that i have been tought that will work is to get a tube that will slip over the driveshaft and is longer than the shaft to smak on, and then allows an even hit all over on the back of the CV. This allows as drmini was saying the circlip to break evenly around the CV joint and spline...

keep hitting harder and more even if you can't find a tube to fit over it..

Most of the Mini Suppliers have them, I know Karcraft does for sure.
