20 for 6lt of "no name" probs not the best. Lol if I could pick up 6lt of castrol 20-50 for $20 I'd b stoked.

Castrol 20W50 is rubbish compared to KMX. Oil pressure goes south on freeway runs.
Been there, used that...
The only Castrol mineral oil that holds pressure hot like this KMX does is 25W/50 Edge Sport, and cost is OVER 2x the KMX. Gotta pay for Castrol's Marketing Machine...
I do use the Edge Sport on track days (coz I have a few cans), but for the road it's no better than KMX.

[edit] KMX is good enough to run in Ford BDA twin cams on GR's engine dyno @9500 rpm. it is good stuff...

Ive been trying to find out exactly who makes these no name oils and Ive had some succses.

KMX oil is made by ashland, which also makes and owns the valvoline brand.
Repco keep changing their supplier its now just penrite pro oil which is just the dregs of the penrite oils.

I am positive KMX is made by ashland aka valvoline as my local kmart did a bulk stack display of kmx using still boxed oil as the base. the boxes where covered in ashland logos and slips.

What Ive noticed mainly is that there is no consistency in these no name oils, they could be made by completely different companies from year to year. Obviously kmart isnt building a brand image they just want who ever can give them the cheapest oil.

I for one will spend the extra $5 dollars a change and get something guaranteed. and the price becomes a null point if you buy specials.
Hell autobarn does $10 brand name 20/50s in their monthly catalogue, thats half the price of kmx and you are getting something consistent.

i worked for repco for many years and sold a lot of that repco oil and never heard or read about it being related to penrite. Not saying it isnt, but unlikley.

i to used penrite HPR30 and had some mayo under the oil cap at times. after changing to kmart KMX recommended by many mini engine builders and racers, i have to say i am blown away at how good it is.

i highly recommend KMX for your mini.

I agree, KMX is an SG oil, use something more modern for the newer twincams (which have proper oil bath lube to the cam lobes, unlike Minis or old V8s).
SG or lower rated oils still have the ZDDP additive, desirable for flat tappet pushrod motors to avoid premature wear. It has been removed (or drastically reduced) from later oils to avoid cat converter etc damage.

Thanks fellas,
I'll have a look at the handbooks for oil specs on the newer cars.
John.
