Did any leave the factory? or is it a shamble story?

As far as I am aware, the Auto gearbox was an option, in the UK on all models except for the Cooper S.

The blocks are machined and drilled quite different to each other. I would seriously doubt that any auto S blocks were done.

Thats what i was thinking....

Thanks GT...

Any other thoughts on this subject?

A bloke apparently has a 65' automatic Cooper S only 1 of 50 in Australia or some horse crap... trying to prove him wrong...

In the UK, the Auto first appeared only on the 850 and that was in October, 1965. It wasn't until October 1967 that it was offered on all models (except Cooper S).

Non-sence I recon.

I just read through this page and it doesn't mention a auto cooper s.

http://joltfreak.tripod.com/id11.html

Not that this page is gospel, but it is another source that doesn't mention it.

BMC Australia Technical Bulletin C54/67 (23/11/1967) announces the introduction of the A Series automatic transmission for the Morris Mini Deluxe (called MiniMatic) and the Morris 1100. For the MiniMatic the engine numbers were 9 AN (UK) and 9 YF (Aust.). There is no mention of this transmission being an option for a Cooper S, or any other vehicle, at that time.

The Cooper S was branded and advertised with a motor sport pedigree so, personally, I can't see why BMC would offer this option. In any case, would the standard automatic transmission be robust enough to reliably handle the Cooper S power?

When I posed the question about reliability if mated to a Cooper S motor it was from a BMC production and support viewpoint. In other words, would BMC be happy to provide full warranty on automatic Cooper S's, including those used in motor sport (rallies, rallycross, motorkhanas, races)? I've had no experience with the Mini automatic transmissions, hence I rely on advice for those who do know.

This same AP automatic was used in the Morris 1100S and 1300 automatics, both have 1275cc, ~61HP and 69 lb/ft torque.
I'd say it would handle a Cooper S spec motor, however performance would suffer compared to a normal S due to power losses in the converter.

If I remember correctly, the 1430cc (112HP) stroker.matic that Lillee drove was only doing around 18.0 secs for the 1/4 mile at WSID.

[edit] typos
