It's a new engine after running it for 10 mins at about 2000 rpm there was so much smoke so we took out the plugs and with a torch we could see about a tea spoon of oil on top of all 4 pistons could this be because a lack of breathers on the motor. Here are some pic's

Hay, it's not about the car, it's not about the venue, it's about the people that come here. Peter Dwyer, Mayor of Hay NSW.

Doogie, when I saw that title and saw you had posted, I knew EXACTLY what you were going to write......

You wouldn't get that much oil on each piston from 2stroke(d) petrol. I should know. I am guessing that you have an issue with your Valve guides on your head. Unless you have had a complete balls up with the machining of the bore to pistons. To me, I'd whip the head off and have a good look see.

Cheers
Aaron

Oops! I feel your pain.

Hopefully something simple, but I'm not sure about the lack of a breather as if the engine is new I would not expect to be getting any blow by of the rings.

Did you spread the ring gaps around the piston so they did not line up?
Do the valve guides have stem seals on them?
Not sure what other silly questions to ask
Maybe someone wiser than me will have some better ideas?

Maybe you could loosen the rocker cover cap as this would prove if there is any pressure building up inside the engine

you really shouldn't have done that. You've probably glazed the bores

People say to run in the cam at 2000rpm for 10 minutes, but that's only for a new cam in an old engine, you needed to run in the rings and bores.

Take it for a drive up a steep hill - make it work - low RPM, full throttle, you've gotta load it up to get the bores worn in

I would agree with Simon here. Don't run it until you can load it up, not for too long, just about 3 or 4 good hard bursts, up to about 3000 RPMs.

Does it have valve stem seals fitted? Often if there is no seals or the seals are buggered when you fill the engine with oil, the rocker cover fills up and oil can leak down the vale stems and into the chamber. Drive it around untill the smoke clears & turn it off and leave it for a while. If you get heaps of smoke on start up again its a fair chance you have valve stem/seal problems, If it continues to smoke all the time you have a problem with rings/hone/clearence issues.

the first time I built a motor, my mate helped me and showed me what to do. After we got it going, not sure what happened, but it just smoked and smoked. To the point where the car was sitting outside with a slight breeze coming from behind it, and it was actually engulfed in smoke - it disappeared.

I changed the head and drove it, still smoky, but less, then went back to the original head, and drove it more, and it was all gone. That motor lasted a good 8 years of wringing it's tits out before the rings went after a poor choice of air filters

I built a motor for dad, and a similar thing happened. It used to smoke at idle, just leave it idling for 30 seconds or so, and it'd start puffing away... he'd babied it when it was fresh and glazed the bores. After a while it went away

not saying that's definitely your issue, but I'd be giving it a good drive before pulling anything apart

I have that problem at the moment - I normally don't bother with exhaust guide seals, and left them off this time.... apparently I need them because I get a lovely plume on startup (but only on startup - just one big puff)

To me, it looked like more oil than would just bleed down the inlet guides. . .I wonder about the integrity of the oil rings. . .
