I dunno about side-draught Webers, but downdraught progressive Webers (DGV, DCD, DFV) wear in the throttle shafts just like an SU. As do side draught Solex which look very similar to a DCOE.

Weber DCOE and Dellorto DHLA both run ball bearings and seals on their shafts...

There is an ausmini member in WA who can perform this mod to SUs, but I can't remember who it is now...

David Rosenthal does them

I made teflon bushes for my twins - I reckon that's the ideal solution 8)

I've performed this job on about 7 sets of carbs now. Early on I used to get them a little stiff, but they actually are very very simple to do, and am now pretty quick and efficient at it. I don't let a pair slide under my nose without putting the bushes in.
No you shouldn't just wade in with a pistol drill (I did on the last set however :P, I did them in the confines of a Defence cabin with no workshop facilities available :P Still turned out great :P :P), but the process is simpler than one thinks. I step it up through the small incremental drill sizes from 1/4 to 5/16th I think it is. Each set have turned out very well.

Step 1: Don butcher's apron.

Step 2: Arrange collection of hammer-pliers and screw-chisels.

Step 3: ....

Me too! Teflon sounds like the right stuff for the job.

Another not unimportant thing to look at is the availability of good manifolds! The best carb is worth nothing if it has to breath through a crap manifold... IMHO there's a lot more good manifolds available for Webers than for (twin-) SUs.

Unless...

nah, I made them myself.

The actual process was a little more complex, but basically...

I bought a piece of ~25mm teflon rod from a local place. All I did was drill out the old bush from the carb, then make a blanks a little bit oversize to fill the holes and pressed them in. I made them stick out into the bore of the carb as well. Then I drilled all the way through it, made it fit the shaft and trimmed the excess from the bore with a razor blade

I see, I see.

Might give it a whirl. Good news is I have plenty of old 1.25 SU carbs to experiment with.....

Delorto for the win !!!!
We have ours on a 7inch manifold through the firewall :D

Makes good top end, but drives very well. Pulls clean from 2500 - 7500.
Once tuned they are fine. Finding parts for them, and finding someone that actually 'knows' what they are doing is a little hard.

As for the look, what looks tougher than a carb sitting though the firewall ?

Tad loud in the car
If your like me, then you fuggin love it !

45 Weber is my favourite by a mile - can't beat the sound of a hot S with a 45 and LCB.
