Well I have a set of well used (but were unbuffed) when i got them and a brand new set (also unbuffed). After a couple of runs in the slalom, the brand new set felt soo much better than the old set. Hard to tell how much it affected times because the conditions were different on the different days.
Looking at the well used ones, the outside of the tread and shoulder are fairly well worn down and the inside is about 50%. There was no blistering or graining, and most importantly no big chunks torn off. This means that the "blocks" were not squirming, overheating and shearing off. And they were off the fastest Nb car, with the best pedaller behind the wheel, so if they were not working hard, then its nobodies business.
I think this is just a suck it and see kind of thing. Make sure that you have the camber set up for them because looking at the guys who run them, they take quite a lot of camber.
cheers
michael
