Location: Sydney - strangely, I am glad of the sight of hills!!
I think the theory that different manufacturers are getting contracts for batches of KMX would account for the tale I was told recently of a recipe change that is performing worse than previously on the dyno.

Oils certainly ain't oils

I think the search continues in Australia for the best Mini oil.

I used the Millers oil specifically made for Minis (or fwd with gearbox in sump anyway) while i was in Europe and it was great. No mayo, maintain oil pressure even when worked very hard.

cheers
mixhael

Thanks for that lead Doc. I'll look it up and I would tend to agree with Kieths comments that there seems to be no modern oil available for Mini's. I hope that is not the situation, hence why I am prepared to go through some testing.

Mickmini, yeah, I tend to think there are better oils - for our mini's - available in Europe, that are not readily available here.

Matt, can't beat the Woolies Oil.......(maybe for running in or for BBQ's  )

Oil pressure etc... is only one measure of the effectiveness of the oil you are using. Plenty of oils will deliver good pressure while offering less wear protection. Unfortunately, it is the additives that make the difference and they are not listed on the container, so really it is guess work. Some engines need more detergents, while some need more zinc etc... it really depends on the tollerances.
Personally, I stay away from GTX and XLD! In non-mini's I am liking Penrite.

For hot Mini engines:

Castrol Edge Sport 25W-50?

I think you were meaning Oil Pressure is not the only measure? If that is it, I would agree.

Yes and No. Maybe from a straight lubrication point of view (Yes), but what about detergents, sluge formation, life span and waxes???

Oh, and while I'm there Matt, do you still have enough undies and stripped socks?

A good way to check the oil ingredients is to check out the Product data Sheets and MSDS on company websites.

for example

Zinc content (some say its vital for old style pushrod engines)

Penrite HPR30 - Zinc Mass% - 0.158
Penrite Classic Light - Zinc Mass% - 0.176

But hey, how much is enough? Would 0.200 be too much? who knows.

If you are happy, stick with what you like.

By the way, the Penrite Classic Light Product information sheet specifically mentions that it is suitable for "BMC Minis"

Totally agree ,don't like either.

Castrol Edge Sport 25W - 50 is what i use, i usually keep an eye out for it when it is on special, then buy a couple of bottles.

What's the 'light' part mean? Light on fat? Salt??

I cleaned the old girl's arteries out with a pipe cleaner and a caustic bath last time I had the oil gallery plugs out. I guess you can never be too careful however...
