Mmm, sounds interesting! :D

The 970S was built for only 1 reason- to win the British 1000cc saloon car championship way back when.
They might be rare but they are slow, and make a lousy road car. You can get more HP out of a 998... with enough mods. :P

It is the rarity that makes them worth having. Not the driving pleasure.

Might as well buy art then... just as useful.

Love your work Doc. Always take note when you opine.

Have got the bastardized Mk.2 for driving. Get the 970 for the Missus. It's a plan to create equilibrium. I get a nice 970 and can keep spending money on Moneypit, a.k.a. The Mk.2. 8)

Sounds like a plan then.
Sorry if you took my previous comments the wrong way, I didn't mean to crap on the idea of owning one.

I would have one in a heart beat a 970S is the coolest of cool.

A 970S is so rare in Australia that they make 1275 S's seem common, even Sport 850's would out number Australian 970 S's by 3 to 1.

They were created for one purpose and that was to win a championship and chances are the car that you are looking at will have an interesting history.

If you want a really desirable Mini then grab it while you can as it will be a long time before you see another.

Good luck with the buy.

If you can buy a 970s then go for it.
They are hard to find.
I have seen two! The real ones!

Clearly the intention is a collectable car. I recon that's pretty cool. As for what it's worth, well, that depands on all the usual factors like condition and originality and in this case the rareity of it, so that adds the 'what are you willing to pay' tax, unless you are the only looker (which I would doubt). Good MKI S in 1275 form are asking big $$ these days, so goodness knows on a 970.

If power was the aim, then you'd go 1275 (or bigger) although from a 970 you could get way better power than from any 998. Bigger bore + short stroke = bigger valves & ports = better cylinder filling and almost un-imaginable revs :D

Who was the fella that sold spares from his house in Telopea/Dundas about 15 yrs ago cant remember his name, I think the business was mini cooper motorsport or something like, anyways I think he was restoring a 970S might have been of the Austin flavour. Is he still around ?

As Mini Man said Derek Smith. Doesn't have anything to do with Mini's anymore apparently, but still about. Don't any more, nor would I care to.

He's still about. On here from time to time as well. He likes to operate under a few names.
