1) The clamps to hold the cv joint boots that came with my minispares disk brake kit are too big. I noticed on the ones i removed they used some wire. Where would i get this wire and what is it called? I

2) My mini came without the heater core, so i am installing one. I am concerned that if the hoses should ever leak, hot coolant would go onto the driver or passenger's feet/legs. I believe there is a type of foam material you can buy to wrap around the hoses which prevent's this and protects the hose? Anyone know what it is / where to get it?

If you really want wire it is 1.6mm soft steel wire.

The clips shown above are better if you can get them. A special tool is used for them but you can get by with using 2 pairs of pliers.

Or some really good quality cable ties!

Watch it using these, the lump on the tie can rub inside the hub and wear through. They work fine on pot joints, less than fine on CVs. The SS clips are way more secure.

The cars came from the factory with nothing around the heater hose.

Most cars on the market have their heater hoses up under the dash ready to spray scalding hot coolant onto your passengers legs at any moment and I bet you don't worry because you don't know it is there.

Hoses usually don't just blow. Fit new ones now and you don't have to worry for about 10 - 20 years.

That wire Doc is talking about is called Tie Wire and can be had from hardware stores including Bunnings. They sell them in rolled up 10 meter lengths for about 10 dollars.

fair enough. thanks guys. does the factory heater hose run through the holes in the pedal assembly and then up through the firewall? As mine never had a heater, im not sure. But this looks like where it was meant to go...
If so i would imagine there was at least some rubber mounts to secure it through the holes?

The hoses go through the holes under the left side of the dash (where the master cyls would be on a LHD). And i think by memory the hole is a close fit so a grommet might not fit, but don't worry too much about them blowing, you'll more likely get a heater core leak.

If it's a 2nd hand core get it pressure tested before install, any radiator place could do it.

If buying heater hoses I'd only use Dayco or Gates `made in USA' stuff, not the cheapo chinese rubbish.
Then as Morris says, no probs for 10 or 20 years.
I'd be a bit worried about using an old Clubby heater tap though.

if you dont have the heater unit in it, how did it pass rego, it needs a fan for demisting the windscreen. The fan is part of the heater unit (which takes up so much friggin floor space).

I removed mine and put a 12v hairdrier in behind the stereo, its wired to the switch below. It blows air on the windscreen, all that is needed to pass rego.

I have some stainless steel cable ties ( for want of a better description) when I got them (from eBay) I thought they were crap and stuck them in a drawer until when putting the boots on the CV joints I couldn't get the supplied ones tight enough and ruined one I dug out the ones from the draw - absolutely brilliant - work like a plastic tie and no way will they come apart when pulled tight.

You can buy the metal ties from Repco (well you can in NZ) they are super long in a packet of 50 about $30 nz pasos

They are a behind the counter item

You need the special tool to insert them tightley buy the tool with the auto cutter

You can use soft steel wire, but you'll find iron tie wire is only about 1000 times better. Concreter's use it for reo tie wire
