You usually pay in pounds using your credit card, the amount will get converted to Oz dollars on your next credit card statement.

You can get about 600GBP worth of goods at the moment.
When you get your total you can do a conversion quite easily on one of the currency conversion websites
I have found the freight is not included in the $1000 limit
Only paid duty fees once when I purchased the supercharger kit as it was about $1800

I believe that if the total cost (including freight) is over $1,000 AUD you are subject import duty. Sometimes you do get lucky though.

How much is import duty?

Is it just the GST or is there another tax on it too?

There is another tax (import duty) on it depending on what it is. There is pages and pages of codes depending on what category it fits into. I think from memory I've been charged in the past 10% duty. GST is then charged on the total amount (including duty). (This is strictly from memory and happy to be proved wrong).

So as you see if you get over the $1,000 aud there can be quite a penalty.

Depending on who you buy it from they might specify that the parts are 2nd hand or provide an invoice amount that you both agree on .

If you are buying from one of the large parts suppliers e.g. minispares. minisport etc... they are unlikely to do this for you.

That has been my experience. I got a big load of stuff from Minisport UK. The shipping company (DHL I think) worked out the import duty for me and I just payed them. It was all very quick and easy and they rang me to check the parts were for a car over 30 years old etc. I was expecting much more of a headache with it.

There's never been a better time to buy from overseas (IMO). I'd buy Australian, but I'm not that rich. I usually just try to work out my shipments to come in at just under $1000 (including freight).

It all comes from the same place anyway...and often it arives from O/S faster too!

When I had parts sent Via DHL I always found that they create a lot of charges even when item total is below AU$1000. EMS is cheaper as long as total is belosw $1000 AU.

For example my brand new fully assembled Cooper S disk brakes were $1440 INCLUDING shipping and admin fee's , NO DUTY
