Now remember I am a novice.

Took the toy out for a spin today, ( Fine and sunny in Melb.), reversing out of he garage, clutch all the way to the floor and gears were grinding, pumped a few times and she was fine. 8)

Whilst driving forward, clutch seems to engage about a hairs breath off the floor, have to push really hard to get smooth gear change, after a few changes she felt solid again. Any ideas....

But otherwise what a great couple of hours out on the road, NOW I know why I loves these cars.... :P :P :P

Smiles all around again.

Bleed the clutch.

Sounds like you may have a leak in either the master or slave.

Thanks mate, I was thinking of that, so I should watch the level of the fluid in the reservior for the clutch then..

No point doing things by half, if one rubber is failing it is time to change them all.
I would rebuild the master and slave and fit a new hose.

Simple to rebuild the slave, Haynes manual is not too bad at stepping you through! I agree that this is more likely the slave than the master, letting air in. If it has not had the fluid changed regularly the bore may be pitted in which case, you can grab a new slave for about $30....quality is nothing special though!

Sorry....they are actually $40 something dollars! Obviously been a while since I last bought one!

As Morris said, it might be wise to look at the hose and master as it could be the master causing the issue. The hose is about $19 and the master is around $100 for a plastic one and $150 ish for a tin type.

The rebuild kits are dirt cheap, but the sleeve in the master or slave has to be free of scores or you are just going to cut out the new seals.

Best of luck!

Davo, if your car is from the 80s then I'll bet it still has its factory master cylinder which will be at least five years older than your engine. Putting a new slave in might only be half the fix. Its also possible the hose has deteriorated, if it seems a bit clackly I'd replace it too.
:D

If you have a recent (asian? made) slave cylinder I've been told that their plastic spreader behind the cup seal (on the spring) is the wrong shape.
It doesn't support the cup properly, so initial sealing is lost.
If you have an old slave cylinder, swap the spreader out of that and all is good.

Thanks Doc!

As I was saying the quality is somewhat poor! Shame our new parts are doomed to fail from new. Might pay to hold onto your old parts for the future!

It depends where / who you buy them from. The new one's I've been getting don't seem to have this problem.
