Whilst going around some corners I noticed that the car seemed to struggle (like I am running out of petrol). Not for all corners, just some.

Tonight I took George for a drive as I wanted to see if I could reproduce the problem - it was annoying me.

As a test, I applied the brake heavier than normal... the car stalled. I tried it over and over, and it does the same thing.

Easy fix (before someone else says it) is that I can not brake hard, but I can't stop from going around corners - that'll take the fun out of the car.

BTW, the car isn't low on fuel.

My question is, what sort of things might cause this to occur?

my first thoughts would be the float valve in the carby, and or fuel pump problems

I would have thought there should be enough fuel in the bowl for that short duration though? Could it be a sticking piston in the SU or incorrect damper oil in the dashpot? Maybe it's electrical? What carb and fuel pump do you use?

Do you have boosted brakes or pcv?
Could be a vacuum problem.

I'd put my vote to float bowl as well. It's not a problem of the float bowl running out, it's a problem with the fuel all sloshing to one side when cornering and sloshing to the front when braking, starving the carby. If the fuel level in the bowl is higher, even if it's pushed to the side or front, there is still enough at the bottom for the carby to keep drinking.

mightn't it be something to do with it being an auto and perhaps it just needs some adjustment?

this was exactly what I was getting at

I had a similar problem on my road trip to Melbourne recently. Got to coffs harbour from brisbane, got fed up with fighting it, and played with the float adjustment and wala, it was perfect after that.

I will try an answer all of the replies (thanks btw).

- it has a 1.5" HS4 Carby
- the fuel pump is the original (not sure of type etc)

- non boosted.

- the revs drop straight away. When cornering the revs drop right off, then it gets its wind and picks up. When braking the revs drop to nothing, and it stalls. I don't have a tacho so I can't tell you exactly what the rpm read is.

Plan of attack:Pull the carby off and check/adjust the float bowl.
I want to check the fuel pump too - just coz.

I will let you know the results tomorrow.

I used to have similar problem in my HQ; turning to right, it used to stall.
Problem was electronic distrubitor module.
Is your dissy electronic or point.
