Gathering some bits and pieces to build a 1275 for the MG.
I have a thin flange 1100S block.
I've got two gearboxes 5/27239 and 5/12481/2
The last one has a diff fitted with 64/17 (1:3.76?)
Would one of these boxes be the original mate to the engine?
Are any boxes better, stronger then others?

Hi MG,

There are numbers that are cast on to the case, about under where the oil filter would be. I think the correct 1100S one was 22A1128. On the diff cap, the bolts for the gear shifter extension housing went in from the side were as the Mini ones went in from underneith.

These boxes were crash on first, would you consider an All Synchro Box? (22G1128).

The correct Diff ratio was 4.1:1 (15 / 62).

Ok I got the "proper" numbers.
The one with the diff fitted is 22G1128 so that's great news :D
the diff fitted is 17 / 64 (3.76)
The other is 22G382

That's a fairly early 3 synchro box, pudding stirer type shifter (850 for one used these). Many of the parts are NLA and I don't think the 1275 engine fit straight on, you'd have to do a fair bit of grinding of the case.

At a guess, I'd say the other (all synchro) gearbox you have came from a Mini K.

Mini K sedans had a 3.647 diff (17/62), so perhaps yours was out of a K or pov pack Clubby van..
I recently did a box up for Morris 1100 which was a K van box (puddin' stirrer gearshift into remote case) and it had a 3.76 diff in it.

oi!! we've been through this before, the 3 synchro 1100S 'box is 22A1288, not G1128

Early K's had a 3.76. Mine did and so did the old man's.

Good to see you back!

Yes Simon, we have, your numbers on the 1100S Box are right, however, quote me right. I said the 22G1128 was all synchro

The 22G1128 has a rod change.
I could have the ratio wrong but the small gear definitely has 17 teeth.
So this is a good box to start with?

Um sorry but noooooo, 22G1128 is a remote or puddin' stirrer box, (a 22G1832 is the common early rodchange one. Later rodchange are all DAM**** prefix).

If you are looking for 4.1-1 diff gears (or 4.2 or 4.3) I have plenty. More than I will ever use.

Just checked on this. ALL Mini K's had 3.76 diff ratio, not just the early ones. The Clubbie 1100 had the 3.64.

You are probably right there- I just call em all K boxes coz after 40 years it's hard to tell what the hell they originally came out of.

This is the gearbox 22G1128 with a gear change "attached".
Is that a pudding stirrer or rod change?
I did a recount of the teeth on the diff and 17 / 64 is correct.
Sorry about the awful photo
