They do normally get fairly warm, however, if your running a coil that is designed to run with a ballast resistor, then it would get hot, but only for a little while.

Had you left the ignition on without running the engine for any extended time?

Coils get hot when the power is on for a while, its just wether its getting hotter then it should.

I had one car i accidently left the ignition on when i put it up on a hoist. After a while i wondered what that funny noise was and then oil started spitting out of the coil. It got so hot it blew the seal out the end and hot oil went everywhere.

Just a few words of advice. After Coils get hot their resistance sometimes drops and they start drawing more current. When this happens the points start burning out prematurely. In the case of Electronic ignition fitted to the vehicle it might be advisable to replace the coil now before it overloads the Ignition Module. I am sure a coil is cheaper than an electronic ignition problem. Measure the resistance of the coil when hot and make sure it is not less than 1.5 Ohms. Do this with all wired disconnected from + and - terminals on coil.
