Where these a common thing? I guess not at that price.

That's the only one I've seen and I seriously doubt it's an original Smaths Gauge. Doesn't come up in any catalogue.

I looked for more info and found a few on that british ebat classic gauge shop so could be the real deal?

I have one of those - it is definately smiths (at least it has the smiths signature logo.

But it doesn't do anything - the red light comes on when you start the ignition, then you press the black button and the light goes out.

Not like a Toyota ute that intitially has a stationary red light, then a flashing red light. then a irrritating beep and finally a shrill beep. Why do we know this - we are 700 metres along a track to our front gate and then the gate needs to be opened. No seat belts until after the gate.

The Series 1 Rover SD1 had something similar - made by Smiths - in its plastic instrument cluster.

A stylized red lighted image of a person with a lap belt across it. Came on when the ignition was switched on, went out when the seat belt was fastened (had a sensor in the belt lock).

A bit of a PITA after a while. I soon disconnected it.

Looks similar to one I saw in the States - perfectly plain black face (with Smiths logo) and a small button. If you pressed the button a small wisp of smoke floated up across the face - just to prove that the electrics still contained enough smoke to keep them working javascript:emoticon('8)')

It is Smiths, they are fairly common. They were listed in catalogues in the late 60s.
There is usually a couple for sale at around £20 in the UK.

When you start the motor the "gauge" lights up and you have to hit the button to turn it off.

In other words, it's just an irritating light.

Who'd want that?

They just want something to fit in this...

Surely they could find something more useful to fill one hole?

I mean they do have Temp, oil pressure, oil temp, voltage, amps, vacuum or a clock to choose from.

I guess you could call it the start of a very long compaign to change people's behaviour whilst driving. Ironically, seat belts weren't even compulsory in Australian cars when this instrument first appeared.
