I have just successfully fixed a Mk1 S dizzy with this problem, without doing any welding.
I machined the cracked shoulder doen to 1.100" dia, then made and shrink fitted an alloy ring on there. Now that it's solid metal like the later dizzys (45D etc) it won't crack again.

Soooooooo, bring out your dead dizzys... :P

Common fault Doc. Another way is to cut a diagonal split in the ring. This makes it a slip fit and the clamp then clamps the ring on the dizzy. Well done !!

Mine has just enough metal for the clamp to grab onto. It could do with fixing.

I "fixed" dad's with some of that "knead it" epoxy stick stuff. Worked OK, but I'll use your idea if it breaks again Kev ;)
