Hi guys and girls,

Im looking at trying to upgrade my alternator as i have updated the sound system. Im not too sure what amperage i should be looking at. At the moment i have a 45amp from a charade a feel it wont cope with with 3 amplifiers and various other electrical instruments. I was looking into using the a landcruiser alternator(100amps and slightly larger than the charade) then running the charade underneath it. I have a remote oil filter so room is not a major priority. Any advice, points, or anything if else that could help me would be muchly appreciated???????

You don't need two alternators, thats just silly.
The 100 amp landcruiser one will be more than sufficient.

I have a stock 65 amp alternator, and the car runs EFI, 4 spotlamps (total 360 watts with high beams) and at 1000 wrms stereo. Battery is a tiny little bugger from a charade or something and it runs fine.
Reason is cause you don't run all your high power stuff together. At most I only ever have 4 lights on, and the stereo only pulls full power at max volume up around 115db or above.

Thanks guys,

The reason i asked is because the three amps are 5700 watts each, i have numerous gauges, and other rubsih that probably shouldnt be on the car, as well as a alarm. So i know that there will be a fair bit of power being drained.

The 5700w would be peak output, rms numbers are what u are interested in as you wouldnt be pumping them 24/7. Either way do a seach there are boys on here who have found 65-100amp alternators that fit with minor bracket modifications. Get a battery with at least 500cca and a ~75amp alternator (single) and youll be fine

Before I upgraded my alternator, I was running my stereo, halogen headlights and driving lights on the tired old stock alternator.

You'd be looking at a pretty serious sound system if 100 amps doesn't do the trick.

Those 5700 watt amps will be measured as peak power - check the specs for RMS power, which is the actual DC power used to run the amp. If you can't find the RMS value, look at the amps fuse. The fuse amperage will be above the current that the amp uses.

For example, if you have a 30 amp fuse, the amp cannot use more than 30 amps - 30amps x 12volts = 360 watts.

It should be alright with the stock components, since the voltage determines the power - provide, say, a headlight with 12V, even if there is 100 amps on tap, the resistance of the lights will limit the current to about 5-6 amps.

Make sure you use the right gauge of wire with the new stuff you're putting in - go a bigger gauge if you can. Too small, and you can melt the wires You could say that a lot of the stock wiring is too small, but it's safe - just not efficient. You might want to check that all your stock wiring is in good order though - perhaps a second earth strap from the engine too.
