Wombat, thanks for those pictures, especially the one from the 60's, LOVE IT!

Can you remember what colour wheels your 64 came with?
Silver or white?

Wheels were silver in both cases - I've had the blue car's powder coated Old English White - before I realised that was an English trim colour. I'm going to sell them and get Contessas or similar anyway.

I haven't looked at this car i'm getting too closely, only exterior and I know the trim is incorrect, but it has matching numbers and is mechanically sound with no rust.

Too good to give up right?

Once I have some plate details i'll get some more in depth questions for you guys

Until then, feel free to continue with the photos!
What stickers should they have left the factory with?

Or, what was common in the time?

BMC Rossette?

And there was talk of an arrow sticker on the rear window in this thread

Check the dates on the wiper motor and boot lock - wiper should also be single speed and stop where you turn it off (not autopark) and park to the right (see my 1966 photo) when you time it right. My 63 model has fitted seat belt anchors in the door pillar but my 64 model didn't

Interior trim varied - some have two tone seats with gray across the front of the swab and sides and back - parcel shelves and doors lined with plain gray hardura - I've seen three different coloured patten vinyl trim - fleck, herring bone and a 'mottle effect' My 63 is the two tone with gray and the coloured mottle effect while my 64 was all green (herringbone)- instead of the plain gray it had pale green - though my memory had gone until I found a car in original (and sad) condition the same as mine was. Standard floor covering was one piece rubber mat. Rear vision mirror was a piddly little thing about 3 x 1.5 inches

This may come as a silly question, but I only really know early mokes well, not 850s:

Did they have front seat belts?
If so, are they lap belts or lap sashes?
And should the rear have belts fitted?

Thanks for all your help wombat

Sorry Adam, I am not much of a help with the 850s. (I should have studied more!)

Front seat belts... I am not sure what year they started fitting them standard but when they did fit them standard they would have been lap/sash. They fitted seat belt mounts in the front for a few years before they fitted belts standard. Till then you had to buy the belts as an accessory and you could chose lap or sash or lap/sash.

They would not have had rear belts new, they were available as an accessory (just like outside mirrors, heaters etc.)
I assume the wheels would have been silver but I can't say for certain.

I probably have a few adverts to share, I will have to dig them out...

Some time in about 64 they started assembling the motors in Australia instead of being fully imported. These motors have the 8Y prefix.

Bloody Hell - wrote a great long thesis on seat belts and the link crashed as I posted it

Dr Mark Birrell - Victoria Police Surgeon campaigned long and hard to get seat belts in cars in the early 1960s which happened in new cars from about 1967 onwards but compulsory wearing of them didn't happen until 1970. I met Dr Birrell a couple of times as I was involved in staging youth rallies and he was only to happy to be a keynote speaker. Channel 9 produced a film called "9/10ths of a second" that's how long it took to die in a head-on at 30mph without a seat belt. – gory stuff.

My 1964 Mini didn't have belts or provision for them so after seeing his presentation I installed them myself - the kit included all the bits and complete instructions - I had to drill two different sized holes on either side of the door pillar to take a spacer and fit plates under the floor.

The 1963 Mini being a CKD car from the UK has provision included as manufacturers in England were gearing up for introduction in England in 1967 and earlier in Europe.

This is all good stuff, thanks for your help everyone.

Cheers for getting back to me two-fold Morris, appreciate it.

Keep the pictures, snippets of information and brochures coming!

Dress rims (The hub caps that aren't the normal circle ones {And no, not the clubman monsters!}):
When did they become an option?
