How long would people recommend that a bare shell sit in a garage without any primer on it?
Ive taken most top layer of paint off but still has the old colour and primer underneath. In some places its gone to bare metal. Its been like that for a couple of months in patches with no signs of surface rust. Just curious as to how long it may last if I do the rest of the car.

Also what type of primer do people use?
I bought some Wattyl killrust etch primer from bunnings in pressure pak can to do my numberplate flap but it doesnt spray like an aerosol instead it comes out like water from a hose ( if you know what I mean )

etch primer is watery. It is only applied very lightly. Having gone to all the trouble of prepping i would get some primer/filler on asap to avoid more prep work later.

It depends on the storage environment. My engine compartment stayed in bare steel for months with no surface rust appearing. Car kept under a cover in the garage.

I will try and get some on the bare metal in the next day or so

I have a smooth top Woody shell on a rack in my garage that has been stored now several years without primer on new steel or old blasted steel. Nil rust.

Garage is fully closed, insulated and gets a little heat when cold outside, where a Mini might want for cover...

if you wanna redo all your work down the track then leave it bare
etch primer is porous and will absorb water, i would use an epoxy

Did my soda blasted shell with a product called Rock Solid, don't know if thats the technical name for it, but you can just call into a panel shop and they will know what you talking about and if it's the right name I'm sure they will let you know what it is called. Goes on easy and covers really well.

I etch primed mine after sand blasting. It then sat in the garage for 14 years, untouched. Got back into restoring it last year - absolutely NO rust anywhere.
