No- the remote extension housing doesn't wear, it's enclosed and bits can all be packed with grease- but the nylon cup under the gearlever can wear or get left out, and the front linkage balls wear a bit, as do the bushes in the diff housing.
All this is easy to fix.. if it's out of the car.

I figured in both cases the wear was in the gearbox (the extension seemed a bit to simple to wear!), maybe in the selector forks or that lego technic style arrangement at the back of the box?

Easy fix you say? Just have to rebuild the rest of the box, being full of metal shavings and still very much in fourth gear!

I fugure that I will have to rebuild Lillee's engine once every 100,000 miles at least. I think if I start with relatively new remote linkages etc it will last that long.

When I pull it down for new rings etc, then it's sensible to replace any other worn bits.

If Mini Haha is anything to go by, the gear selector in that is still rock solid after 60,000 miles. And don't think for a second that the good doc drives Mini Haha like a gentleman either

On the other hand, I think my rod change selector has done approx 70,000 miles and it's a chopstick in an empty cup!

100,000 miles   My current engine lasted 30,000km since rebuild, and the previous engine had done less since being 'rebuilt' by the previous owner (methinks he 'rebuilt' it by painting it purple, the rings had gone in a matter of months). It's always good to have a motor you have personally rebuilt, or have overseen the work yourself, so you know whats been done. Then you know nothing has been left to chance, and that it has been done right the first time. Can't say that about any of the engines I have owned so far!
