Tricky, you`re gonna need WAY more speakers & WAY more MDF & WAY more fibreglass than that,,, how else do you think it will stay stable on the road?

I wanted to do something a little different from the everyday Mini (why is this such a curse?) and I wanted to have some controls in an overhead console. Ever since I saw my brothers RX4 I thought overhead consoles were the dukz nutz. Anyway, prior to bogging and sanding the roof and getting all that fair, I welded in a bracket so that this would happen.

While I was off work I decided to try and fabricate an overhead console out of fibreglass from a mould. And this is the result. It will house the interior light (details of which are yet to be released but will look great I think), a couple of idiot lights (door open, low fuel and seat belt warning lights) in the same vein as the interior light. In the centre is a cutout for the digital keypad which is actually the coded ignition switch for the starting circuit for the engine (ala Transporter 1 and 2). I think it turned out great and will be painted the same colour as the rest of the interior bits.

Bogged, sanded and ready for final hi-build and sanding:

Thanks Ranger - yes it was a major cluster f*%k alright!! Some minor O/H controls, just the keypad for the ignition circuit, some lighting controls, interior lights themselves and some idiot lights - or else it just looks too crowded.

If you have second thoughts about painting it yourself.. I know a very impressive painter 4 hours north. He does alot of Hot Rods & Old school Muscle cars here...

will you make a rod that runs flush around the top unit than runs through the hem of the lining
or cut a rectangle and velcro or clip it to the unit

Hey Richard,

Yes, the hood lining will still be installed. If you have a look at the pics, you will notice the roof console hangs down from the roof perhaps 25-30mm which is enough for it to touch the hood lining but clear it.

The hood lining goes in untouched, the the unit sits underneath - might not be too noticeable in the photos. There is a bracket welded in at the rear, which will protrude through the hood lining to allow the unit to clip/screw to it. I used the original hood lining as a depth guide, so hopefully I am failrly close. Plus or minus 10mm is neither here nor there. I will adjust the bracket in the console accordingly to get the depth spot-on once the hood lining has gone in.

The unit clips up at the front with a bracket that is screwed to the roof sill where the old rear-view mirror would be. The new rear-view mirror is glued to the window ala Ford.
