Can someone explain to me the id plates on an 850?

How do you tell the year that it was built? :?

The ID plate won't tell you much. To get a general date, have a look at the starter motor, generator and windscreen wiper motor. They all have month and year they were made. These were all made at least a couple months before the car was assembled. There's also dates on the window glass, distributor, floor starter switch, ignition switch, and (I think) the regulator.

Another way would be to contact "Sports 850" who has been collecting numbers. He may be able to fit your numbers (engine / body) into a particular month.

Cheers
Alex.

Wow, talk about freaky coincidence... I was just putting my boot lock back in my car and i wire brushed off all the rubbish paint that the previous owner had put on and i noticed that there was numbers stamped on there. And i was thinking " I wonder if that is a build date no.?? You are starting to answer my questions even before i ask them now drmini....

Mine had "M 16 4" stamped on it... so does that mean 1964??
