Not really.

I just think the SU far too often gets unbolted, shoved under the workbench, and replaced with a stinking thing that makes a bit more noise.

LEAVE SU ALONE!

I'll just set the record straight here-
Webers and Dellortos both run ball bearings and seals on their throttle shafts, so the shafts don't wear.
And, because the shafts are so well located, the 2 butterflies don't wear, either.

There is a bloke in Perth who will put ball bearings on yer SUs, but it's not cheap to do...

Tyson,

i love SU's!

Simple amazing get ya out of trouble carb, can be modded to become a very dangerous threat to Webers, Ask Doc... The power difference between his 45 dello' and HS6 on the dyno was very slim...

Ill be changing my 45 weber to HS6 or HIF44 in the next month or so just to compare.

Just for the record, im running a 45 weber on an 1152, and i freakin love it!

I love my HIf44 and the one on the 1152 has never missed a beat. I'm about to but another on my Van motor Upgrading from a 1 1/2 Su. I'm very interested to see & feel the differance

Not a 1098, but....
The difference on my 1412 stroker between the 45 Dellorto and HS6 SU was a whole 0.4HP, the Dellorto won that. (114HP vs 113.6).
However the SU (with RE7" manifold) made 4ft/lb torque more than the Dellorto. (112ft/lb vs 108).
These figures were off GR's Froude engine dyno, so are not fudged rolling road ones.
Unhappily, there wasn't room to use the RE7 manifold in my car with any filter. (No Weber box and a centre speedo).
So I sold it and bought a Minispares HS4/HS6 manifold. Even when ported out a bit and using a 20mm spacer, it is well down on power above 5000rpm. It's going into the wife's van though, so with a bit more porting, it'll do. 8)

Where do ya start porting it out Doc? First step is to port match yes? then what?

Why not go the whole nine yards and try twin-HIF44s or HS6s. :)

IMO the Weber scores in intake lenght. People go all the way and cut they'r bulkheads to fit Webers with long manifolds. But noone does the same with SUs. Why?

In my opinion, the only fair comparison would be twin HIF44s/HS6s vs. 45 Weber on a same lenght manifold!

If I can grab a 40 Weber for cheap, I will compare it against Twin HS4s on the same manifold (JanSpeed).

Here's the only SU manifold I know of that's a decent length.
Graham Russell's 1400 stroker made over 140HP at crank with one of these, and a modified HS6.

Our mate Luis in Portugal has one also (I machined 2 of em a while back).

We run a 45mm Weber on our 1100 (well, 1220 8) ).

It does have a 1275 head on it and puts out over 60hp at the wheels.

They sound great, look great and have plenty of torque.

Perfect for motorkhanas that we run in.

:D :D

I had a standard 998 (+20 thou) and ran a 40mm side draught weber on a 'dreaded' goose neck manifold and the usual redline rectangle filter with no clearance problems (this was on a 77 clubman). no issues from standard fuel pump and with only 1.75" extractors the car would easily do the 160 on the speedo (and not take too long getting there).

only changed now as building 1310 7 port with twin 40's hanging out the front.

I know the goose neck manifold gets a bad rap; however, it is perfectly good for your car if you are just after driveability and not chasing sheepstations at the traffic lights. I use both depending on what I am doing - around town the gooseneck is great for economy and still has enough up to the midrange revs(hurts like a bugger higher than 3800-beyond rpm). the Warneford 3005 goes on for highway driving but is a bit more of a squeeze.

I have three manifolds here that I am deciding which one to use permanently - for ease of working on the car - the goosy is my choice as I am a lazy shite!!

This is a link to one of my favourite vids with a roaring weber/Dellorto in Bens Mini around bahurst in 2007.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6E2rllos ... 74E3319211

After seeing this vid and the memories of triple webers on my original XU1 that got stolen 15 years ago   I had to get one for my new project :D

Edit: Stolen and completely stripped I might add, what a waste of an original  Yeah I'm completely over it now
