They didn't get away with it!, made them replace it with a brand new laminated windscreen and the paint damage repaired, as it was the fitter's fault, and the boss of the company came and fitted free of charge.

The first screen i tried that was unsuccessful was a Chinese brand , very chunky and not well finished on edges. The one ob's replaced it with is an "Australian Autoglass" brand. Prob still Chinese but much better quality and finish. Fitted no probs with new rubbers, looks great.

The two screens that the fitter tried to install where both from the same supplier , I spoke to the supplier today and he did tell me that they do come from China

I have found "Australian Autoglass" to be OK in the past.
Just need to track down a current supplier.

Has anybody been having the same problems with windscreens and rubbers lately ?
A mate is going through this drama at the moment , he bought a brand new laminated
screen , GP I brand , as well as a brand new rubber and cannot seem to get it fitted .
He has previosly fitted the same brand of screen into his previous car that he resto'd without any dramas , but he cant remember where he bought the rubber from.
Is there a particular supplier of rubbers that fit properly that anyone has experienced ?

Well, I am gals to hear I'm not the only one having problems. I'm still trying to find a place that will come out and fit the locking strip. They're all shying away when they find out it's a older car.

I'll make sure they are really careful , I sont want a smashed windscreen!

I heard all about these problems with different screens so I decided to elliminate the problem and fit the original hardened glass, with new rubbers. Also decided to let a professional fit them. After gallons of the slippery stuff they went in but they were very very tight. Now that meant there was very little room for the locking strips. Consequently stuffed 2 locking strips and the tool. Came back a week latter with new strip and after a lot of puffing and gritting his teeth got them in. But, not without a bleemish or two.

From my experience, it's the new rubbers, either too hard or the wrong profile. My rubbers came from the same place slacko got his.

I put both mine (pre-loved toughened screen) back in late last year with new rubbers and locking strips, I do not believe the rubbers have changed. What has changed is the size/shape of new laminated screens.

both the windscreens and rubbers have changed over the years, not just in minis
when i was a windscreen fitter we had many rubbers and screens that were way off original, taking rubber squash into factor too, many times we hade to re use old ones and use a bit more sealer to get them fitted.
Many times we had to use "aftermarket generic cut to size" rubbers!

Run a razor blade around the screen to cut off exess laminate then sand the edges to de burr the new screens before you fit them, and you can wear the glass down a bit to get them to fit if you have too, just be careful and use medium grit going parralel to the glass

The difference in dimensions between the glass [EG vertical measurement] & the "hole it is supposed to fit into" when installed in the rubber should be approx. 8 to 10mm overall... 4 to 5 mm top & bottom * [or left to right if you measured that dimension]..vertical is better because the glass is flat.

This 1/2 difference in measurements ^^^*should equal the thickness of the web in the rubber strip & will allow the filler strip to be inserted safely.

This will only happen if the glass is the correct shape, obviously.

Clarke Rubber sell "cut to length" in different sizes.
