I bought a 69 mk 2 cooper s a few years ago. The old owner said that the mk2 69' cooper s didnt come out with a compliance plate (id plate) is this true? or what is the go? I heard the same thing from a few different sources but just wanted to confirm it.

Motor reg have said to register the car it needs to have a id plate with the matching numbers, which i suppose can be organised but i really dont want to especially if i dont have too.

They stopped fitting ID plates during 1969, about the time of the changeover from Mk1 to Mk2.
From January 1970 Compliance plates had to be fitted by law.
There was no requirement by law for plates before this. So for a period of about 6 months there was no plates fitted at all.

Tell the rego authorities to look in their books again. (I hate it when people in authority get things wrong.)
No car before January1970 needs a plate. It only needs a number. BMC fitted ID plates for their own benefit and not because they had to.

An ID plate is not a compliance plate.

I will dig up some written stuff that you can print off and take with you...

I owned a '69 Mk 2 (often referred to as a Mk 1 1/2) for many years which was purchased in May 69 and did not have an ID plate. I also saw the car that was built immediately after mine (ie next chassis no.) and it didn't have an ID plate either.

In essence, the above extract from the BMC workshop manual is slightly out with its date of June '69.

I know of mine and another 69 MK2 that don't have ID plates. And yes, these are genuine S.

Same as some of the above posters, I had a 1969 MkII Cooper S for many years, genuine S and it had no ID plate, just the correct stamping in the body work and the sticker on the firewall with the colour.

So if you dont mind me asking,
When i go to recency(transport inspection place) to have a ID check done on the car, what numbers will thy be checking?

The engine number obviously, but i wouldnt expect that they have the body numbers in there system? and they also dont have the ID plate to compare it too?
The reason i ask is because i have repainted my engine bay and the body number is not very clear and digits could be missinterpreted.

They should check the body number and the engine number. If it is not clear it might cause problems.
Make it clear to make life easier. Don't take it for a check if you know they can't read it clearly.

So, can a car having all its stampings in place be registered if it doesnt have a compliance plate fitted, when said vehicle would have had a plate but unfortunately has been removed?

Yes, as the compliance plate it not a VIN plate, it just lists the ADRs that the car was built to.
