i've changed a few of the ancilliaries on my motor to try and get a more reliable set up...

it's an 1100S donk with some sort of lumpy cam, lcb's and now a hif44 and Aldon yellow dizzy...

as i've changed both the dizzy and carb at the same time i'm trying to find a base point, i'd like to be able to drive it to the eventual tuner rather than have to stuff around with a trailer...

i'm trying to follow these instructions..

http://www.minimoke.net.au/rest_carbie.htm

it sounds pretty good with heaps of advance (?) on the dizzy (turned quite clockwise) but i can't get it to idle below about 2500rpm...

if i turn the dizzy back to get a lower idle it just runs like poo poo

also the centre branch of the extractors gets pretty red hot, pretty quickly.. i'm not used to an A series running red hot?

any suggestions?

Ok so what i recommend you do is

Have the base settings for the carb as those instructions suggest, and then fire the car up, so that it will run on it's own, even if this means screwing the throttle open with the choke out.

Once the car is running, get your dizzy and retard it, then advance it to the point where it runs faster and smooth, then retard it back a little bit to before it sped up the revs. This should be good enough for you to concentrate on the carby (but will probably require a final, more accurate setting). Then you can slow the carb down whilst setting the mixture.

However if you have a leaking manifold, or the carb is fudged up then you'll just have problems.

And when you say the exhaust is red hot, do you actually mean its glowing red? or just really hot. Because running the car at 2500rpm will get it nice and hot fairly quickly. One time i replaced the head gasket in my car, i was holding the revs up a bit to get it to warm up when i happened to have a laser pyrometer (or whatever they are called) and the extractors were 250 degrees celcius in no time. But that wasn't red if your wondering, just hot.

edited for the exhaust part

good advice, i trust the carb as i bought it freshly rebuilt... manifold leak, hmmm, worth checking for, i love my mini but geez sometimes it's hard working on it with my girth of arms and daft of head.
