Went to put on the original gear knob that I got yesterday, to find that the reason the rubbish one the P.O had put on kept slipping was the metres of electrical tap he had wrapped around the shifter to help wedge the knob on.

Once I got all that off and put the original on the feel is much nicer!

Drove the Mini around this morning looking for a power steering hose O-ring for the AU Ford.
Every damned place that might have one is bloody SHUT
Power Ford service = shut (what service- they only open every 2nd sat now)
B&R Brakes = shut
Bursons = don't keep
Blacktown Auto Spares = don't keep

Bugger, it can sit on the ramps until next Tuesday. :x

replaced my wornout old speedometer

anyone know of anyone reputable in Wollongong or nearby that can do overhauls on the old one?

mine started going from 0-90 mph and back and all over the shop - I got a replacement from ebay but it has less lights (ie highbeam etc) on it and has more miles than my original.

and yes it was the speedo and not the cable that was worn, I tested an it works fine with the new one

I'll put up with the replacement for now so I can do the correct speed, but would like to put the old original one back in fixed if possible

cheers

I have not used them but a workmate from down the coast claimed that they do good work. (he had a Cooper S speedo and various other things fixed by them.)

I painted my engine and put some shiny bits on. Bent new tubes for the brake and clutch resevoir with my new pipe bender and put the engine into the engine bay. It's just sitting there, hopefully I will get it bolted in tomorrow.....

Let's see..

1. Pulled the rod shift off to fit another shaft seal, as the one in there was leaking lots. Couldn't drop the oil as I don't have enough for a fill, so just knocked the new one in over the old. No more leaks 8)

2. Noticed while it was apart that the bush to which the shift steady bar attaches at the gearbox end was shagged, so attempted to pull it out. Sorry sir, your exhaust is in the way.. so had to drop that too. Had a leak to fix anyway, so not so bad.

3. While under there, noticed the pot joint boot on the exhaust side had no cable tie, so fitted a new one. Then noticed that the end rubbed on the exhaust, which explains where the old one went. Wrapped a length of welding wire around it instead, it's unlikely to melt ;)

4. The throttle pedal felt underfoot like it had broken, lots of sideways play. On closer inspection, the spot welds holding the two bracket plates together had weakened, so seam welded them back together.

5. Finally finished the seat frame I had started months ago for the Cobra Classic I had waiting to go in. Took a bit of tweaking to get the seating position right, but it's a big improvement over the sagged and cracked original which came out. Not sure I want to have a rear-end shunt in this seat though, I can feel the whiplash already...

All in all, a pretty productive day in the garage 8)

Washed it.

Turns out it's red, who knew?

Also gave the engine bay a surprise with a can of Export Degreaser and the pressure washer, that stuff's worth bottling it does such an amazing job! 8)

Fitted the tail lights and front blinker lights and then discovered the new front guards have different holes for the headlights :?
Looks like the later round nose guards are different? Why do they do this to me?

Strange design those AU power steering hose. Not sure why the fitting is designed to float so much?

POR15 all the gutters and seems, etc on the mini today, made sure to get primer on 5 hours later though
Body deadner all finished underneath today too.
