I got twin 1 1/4 SU's on LYNX manifold yesterday for nix (from the in laws stash of stuff). They look good, but no doubt need a rebuild or a kit put through them.

I know sweet F.A about SU's..... :oops:

What's involved in kitting them?

I put a kit through my set of twins a long time ago and heres what I remember. They come with new gaskets, new butterly and srews, new jet and I think new throtle shaft. Does not come with throtle shaft bushes and you will need to get them fitted if they are worn. The kit is standard for 1.5 and 1.25" carbs. Apart from the throtle shaft bushes its all easy to DIY and the kits come with instructions from what I remember.

Hey Anton,

First off, take lots of pictures of every angle of the carbs. Worste case scenario you can refer back to the pictures if you don't know where things go :wink:

Single SU's on their own are piss easy. You can pull one apart and put it back together no probs, however with twins you have to worry about linkages etc. If I were you I'd get my hands on a book or two...

If you have twins, do one at a time. There really isn't that much to them. The linkages are two bars one for choke and one for throttle. Easy! Pull one done clean it to the nth degree, then replace the parts supplied in the kit. Once it is all back together, do the other one. If you are really concerned i have a book on tuning them, which will be helpful to get your starting point when you go to start the car,

If the throttle shafts are still good, Davo can get you the Fuel Miser SU-750 repair kits, cheap. Under $20 each... :wink:
I've got 2 here to do Barney's HS4s.

Simplist carby known to man this side of a Reece Fish and you are unlikely to find one of them in Oz. If the shafts aren't perfect...very unlikely get new shafts and I am sure Doc can bore the bodies and put bushes in them on his mill !!! After that just put the kit in them and centre the jet.

First thing i would do with them is give em a bath in petrol or your choice of solvent for about a week or two. Then pull one apart clean all the parts. Then if you think it needs a sand blast do it then. I would be a little hesitant with doing the blasting, as the inner bell housing may get some kinda warping... i know they beadblast them to reco them but i have heard that sand is harsher than beads. Just a cautious note thats all.

Yeah I wouldn't be too hasty with the sand blasting. You'd be surprised how clean you can get them with just carb cleaner / parts washer and a brush, doesn't take too long and isn't too risky. I acid washed an HS4 body and it never looked the same again (damn alloy crap :lol: ), the nicest SU I did was with carb cleaner, and a fair bit of autosol and a buffer wheel on a Dremel-ish tool (Ryobi I think). Looked fantastic! You can also get nice alloy dashpot covers (also come in red and blue anodised).

As for rebuilding they aren't too hard, choke linkages (as in individualy on each carb) can be a pain to get back on and make them work properly, sometimes they clean up alright without removing them. Don't even bother trying to rebush them unless you have a lot of experience. I tried, that is one more ruined carb body added to the pile :shock: You can put oversize throttle shafts and ream them, works quite well but with HS2s it can only do bad things to the flow :wink:

Not much more to add really, as long as they are nice and clean, with new gaskets, and the dashpots go 'clunk' when you drop them, it should be all good!
