Hi everyone.
well the litle mini still wont start.
Ive now taken photos of the rotor possition
to see if im doing anything wrong.
Ive removed the dizzy...turned the engine over
till no 1 piston is at top dead centre
the 1/4 mark on the flywheel lines up with the poniter also on the fly wheel.

Image

the rotor still dosent seem to point to
no 1 cylinder??? see photo or is this ok?
ive been told this dosnt matter.

now im told the firing order is 1,3,4,2?
and the point on the dizzy cap the rotor is pointing to is no 1 on the cap ?
then in an anti clock wise mottion i fit the leads to the correct spark plug?
im gusing the order of cylinders is 1,2,3,4 and no 1 is the closet to the radiator so from right to
left it goes 3421?
but please add any comments if its wrong.

im concerned that maybe the dizzy isent set right and even though it slides into possiton
maybe its wrong?
she did back fire once but she dosent sound like she even wants to start.

any suggestions ?

i realy want to get this dizzy setting up right then concentrate on other things like
maybe the coil is stuffed but everything else is new only the coil was not
replaced but i was told it was tested and all ok.

I think I see the problem.

The rotor button turns anti-clockwise. The firing order is 1,3,4,2. However, you have assumed the rotor button rotates clockwise and patched the plug leads accordingly.

In picture #2, the rotor button is in approximately the right spot - its proceeding anticlockwise towards cylinder number one - so that is plug lead to spark plug 1. The next to that (anticlockwise) goes plug lead to cylinder #3 then etc.

Thry that - it should start but you will have to further adjust to get the fining tuning of the timing right.

Make sure it's TDC on no.1 compression not exhaust stroke

this looks like what you have done? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unlA7pNGUeU

now have you static timed it like so? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpp67aqwM2Y&feature=relmfu

if no luck with that, then you need to check your getting spark, that your carb is relatively clean and there is no gap between the inlet manifold and the head (due to ur extractors). the other thing is its easy to flood the spark plugs so take the spark plugs out, crank it over a few times to blow out the excess fuel and try again.

What a valuable couple of video's they are - pity you cant just down load them and same them as references.

The static timing is a beauty. I have never done it that way, I always have done it looking for the points to spark and it can be hard to see out in the open.

You can save them, you just need to use something like keepvid or savevid

Okay I have cracked that savevid now. I am downloading a number of how-to videos. Given some time and bandwidth issues I will make a DVD of it all and make them freely available to anyone who wants them.

Real Player works well also. I've got it on my MAC, and on my netbook.

Mike - In that video it says connect the dizzy wire (-ve) to a test light and then find a 'hot' contact (power). It then says to rotate clockwise the dizzy until the light just goes out.

After looking at several other static timing videos they say connect the dizzy wire (-ve) to a test light then find an earth and rotate the dizzy until the light just comes on.

Why is this and which one is correct? Is it because the MG is positive earth???
