I've managed to get a hold of one (Free...nice)

it's all in bits and there's a bunch of other stuff that came with it.. couple o' chains ,couple of extra 1.25 carbs, bearings and a full set of piston rings...

i was trying to figure out whether it would be worth using the parts from the 997 (9FSAL with at 12G202 Head) in my standard 998 (99H791 Mini 1974 onwards with dished piston)

OR

Sell of the 997 bits, to fund extra crap for the 998.... such as... discs.. :)

Hi,

The 997 has a longer stroke and smaller bore than the 998. The 997 is not as willing to rev and is harder to get parts for.

The 12G202 head from a 997 can be fitted to a 998 block and is a little better flowing. But the same head is commonly found on manual 1098cc engines anyway, so it is not particularly rare. Better to use a 12G295 if you can find one.

Personally I would sell the 997 to someone who needs it to restore their 997 Cooper and spend the money on 998 mods, or even put it towards a 1275 engine.

Regards,

too true - 998 is a much more willing engine

I agree. 997 Coopers were fully imported AFAIK and anyone who has one should try and maintain its originality (go and hack up deluxe body/hot up an 998, 1100 or 1275S if you need to!!)

BTW I know someone who has such a beast and may be interested in acquiring some more "insurance spares" - let us know what you decide :)

Drums aren't realy that bad if you use good quality shoes, clean the dust out regularly and keep then adjusted. They should do the job on a mild 998 or 1098.

The van has been my daily driver for the last four years. It has a fairly warm 1098 donk, and the drums seem to cope okay.

My work sent me on a driver training day a couple of years ago, and I took the van. I was stopping in shorter distances on wet bitumen in the Mini (controlling lockup) than a guy in a three week old Commodore HSV ute - and he had ABS. :D

But, I applaud your priorities in upgrading the brakes first. The Traveller and Moke will both have disks.

mokes have discs... dammit... :) i've been ignoring mokes as i didn't think i could use any parts from them.. . hehe...

what size discs do the mokes have? 7 or 7.5?

how hard are you on the brakes of the van?

i wouldn't mind doing a driver training course, just gotta find one in adelaide :)

I drive the van pretty hard, but I tend to use the gears to slow down for corners rather than the brakes. The only time I got the drums to fade was after repeated punishment on the great ocean road. :D

Most Mokes have drum brakes, just like a Mini. The 1972 "Export" Mokes (made in Oz for the American market, but also sold here in RHD form) have a 1275 and DRUM brakes from the factory. So a Moke with a 1275 and drums IS LEGAL. 8)

Remember a Moke is lighter than a Mini!

Only the later Moke Californian 1275 have disk brakes - 8.4" or the same as a 1275LS, Rover Mini etc. Good luck finding a wrecked Moke Californian with disks though. They are pretty rare!!

I'm making up a Honda City conversion for my Moke. Now, I wonder where I got that idea... As it wil be running an 1275 A+ Auto I figure disks will be required. 8)

The Traveller will be getting S disks.

Greettings MC again

Looks like you are picking up parts nicely. As the guys above have said, sell off the parts for the 997 but try and save the head. Is always good to keep a spare (I have 2) head just incase and you could do one up with larger valves.
Have you done anything o Astro

Sorry I forgot. If your going to stay with the drums make sure the Shoes are not the rivited type but the bonded ones.

gaf....

haven't done anything yet.... haven't even driven it... as the clutch is still bung... but it's pay day tomorrow so who know... it may still be another fortnight :)

how much do you all think i should get for the engine, minus the head, i'd be willing to swap it for some 7.5" disc assemblies i.e. cv joints outwards.. ;)

and

are 12G940 heads hard to find in aus...?

UNsure on the price you should get for the 997 but the 940 head are a little hard to find and the 295's are even harder.
But also when the do come up you do have to check that does not have a crack in it (bin it) and has not been machined to much. I know of one 940 head and they want $500 for it  . every time i have bidded on a 295 I have been out bidded right at the last minute and priced over $300

I will get one sometime

12G295 heads were fitted as standard to AUTO Morris 1100.

Every time I see an A series powered car in the wreckers I check the head casting. I once found a 295 head on an 850 engine in a country wreckers. It cost me $50! :D

I only have the 295 that's fitted to my van now. I know two mates who have a 295, but neither will sell me one. :(

Nothing rare about a 940 head here, kazjim has a couple for sale cheap.
BTW, a 12G1316 (smog) head (LS and 1275 Moke Cali) is pretty much the same as a 940, just has air injection ports added. Some of those heads are still about too.
I just bought yet another... it's going on the 1132 Clubbie (with a notched block) next year.:P
