My Dad used to use a chain through a high pressure hose and a padlock between the steering wheel and brake pedal.

My tip to make flat bed theft more difficult is to steer to full lock before engaging any steering lock, then it's a PITA to pull up a ramp.

If it's in gear (fwd ) and the handbrake is on ( working ) it makes it easier to pull it straight on to truck !!!

8 tonne winch is NOT going to put up much of a fight. I can repo a car in less than 3 minutes.

There are many ways of immobilizing a vehicle. Most times the simplest things are the best and most effective. Don't ask on here how to do it or what to do as you will be telling the world what you did to immobilize your car. Ask someone in person so at least you will know who the other person that knows your system is ! I will not give any details on how I do my own system. Even when I wire an inhibitor system to a car I just prefer to tell the owner of the car how to operate it and "NOT HOW IT actually WORKS". You tell your mate how your security system works it is no longer a security system.

if it has an electric fuel pump i put a switch on that, beauty is it will rin for a minute then stall, so thief gets it out and moving, then it conks out, chances are they just ditch it and run then.

Lillee's rules for best preventative measures:

Don't take the mini if:

1) If there is no secure parking or garanteed parking in front of the venue where you can see it.
2) If the event takes longer than 20 mins away from the car and I need to park on the street, or unsecured parking
3) if going to Newtown, Lakemba, Bankstown (or similar suburbs)
4) if going to the City, (although I have found a relatively secure cheap park in the city)
5) Large sporting/entertainment events
6) Gut feeling says, leave her at home

Always have at least 3 forms of deterrent. 4 is better, 5 is best, 6 or more and you have a psychological disorder:

1) Clublock, visual deterrent of most visible kind. Preferably red. Preferably big
2) Hidden Ignition cut off switch. Run from key to switch to fuse box
3) Hidden electric fuel pump switch. From pump to switch to fuse box
4) Battery cut off switch/key. Usually installed on the ground side of the battery
5) removal of hardware: I like distributor rotor removal from my Bosch electronic ign, admittedly I don't do this often but last time I checked it was a quick action and small thing to carry with you. The other good one is to remove both fuses from the fuse box, that sorts out most electronics including fuel pump.

Tip of the day:
Use heavy duty 3 position switches for your cut off stitches. Wire them up so that it appears all positions have a use. Only you know which position is "GO" position, the other two are dummies. Hide them in good locations, never tell anyone about them.

Lastly, LOCK UP!

Thanks all for such insightful and bloody depressing feedback and ideas.

My current thinking is:

1. leave Claude in the garage;
2. if he goes out he remains in sight;
3. a GPS tracker is a must.

I can't cut into this car. It's been looked after since 1964 and I do not want to meddle with it.

Some great ideas though that I will think seriously about for the Mk.2. Thanks again all.

Now I will be very, very quiet....... 8)

how about a decent paging alarm.

GPS tracker also a great idea, cos then you know where they live.

I had my AP5 Valiant at the local service station when a lot of the cars there were broken into. They broke into the valiant and tried to start it - but I don't think they couldn't figure out how to work the pushbutton automatic!

They also tried to break into an old porsche and a few other cars, but they didn't get away with any of them.
