I could be wrong here but I have a vague recollection the number is somewhere in each lock, eg if you pull apart your boot lock it's stamped somewhere but it may involve removing the barrel.

But be aware barrels are sometimes altered to suit a different key, I've done that a few times myself by rearranging/filing down the pins.

Just to add a couple of photos to show how the numbers and dates were stamped onto the ignition switch...

The early ones have the key numbers on the face of the barrel, I don't know when they changed but the two locks on my desk are 63 and 65.

This is the 65 switch, the numbers are on the barrel inside the lock, you need the key in the lock and then poke a small screwdriver or probe into the hole in the switch to remove the barrel.

Keys (2) just arrived from the US. Both cut and fit the car and are on Wilmot Breeden blanks.

Great service and I can recommend the guy, Peter Groh.

I went to the locksmith on Booth St, Annandale with the numbers from the ignition barrel and he cut one with his computerised key cutter! Works better than the keys that came with the car!
