I have been trying fit a new clutch plate into my wife's M1100S. I did the right thing and replaced the clutch oil seal. I dont have a seal press and the seal is just not sitting flush on one side.

Nothing I have tried with the resources I have here in woop woop have been made it sit flat and all the way home. Its about an eigth of an inch out at one point.

I dont want to pull the engine out at this point just to tap a seal all the way home.

Any suggestions or can someone lend me the proper tool. I may actually be in Sydney this weekend unexpectedly

Mike

Basically a tube made from a tin can that is the right diameter and levered against the sub-frame with an iron bar. The tube collapses before the seal moves.

Lots of ineffective tapping - too little room to swing.

Lots of ineffective finger pressure

The proper tool is made of two metal tubes , the inner tube or sleeve goes over the primary gear to stop any damage to the seal , the outer tube or sleeve moves the seal into place by putting the flywheel bolt inside and tightening

As a bodge I can only think of a tube the right size to protect the seal and a deep reach socket the right size to fit over and try to tap it in

What he said re the proper tool- ^^^
You can wrap the splines with tape or a thick plastic bag, to protect the seal- to fit the seal I made a tool from a bit of steel pipe with a big washer welded on the end (the pipe must be cut square). Then use the flywheel bolt to press the seal in straight.

The splines were protected - very conscious of that - its driving home the seal flush thats causing me grief.

Might think about a tube of steel and using the flywheel torque to push it in

Be careful which seal you fit.. there are 3 lots about now.
Cheap one- (I had mine leak after around 8000 miles since rebuild)-
http://www.minis.com.au/minis/catalog/p ... cts_id=368

Competition `Gaco' one (these are what we used to buy here for yonks as the standard seal)-
http://www.minis.com.au/minis/catalog/p ... cts_id=904

Rover injected seal (black)- these are better than the cheap one and I use if I can't find the `competition' one.

Karcraft carries the cheap one and the black one, I can't find the comp one in my cattledog....
Minispares UK carries all three.

Its an orange colour one that was purchased over the phone from the Silverwater supplier so its probably the cheaper version.

These have no name but 10 recessed dots on the face-
http://www.minis.com.au/minis/catalog/p ... cts_id=368

Competition `Gaco' (orange) one (these are what we used to buy here for yonks as the standard seal)- 4 recessed dots with `Gaco' marked on the face-
http://www.minis.com.au/minis/catalog/p ... cts_id=904

Rover injected seal (black)- these are better than the cheap one and I use if I can't find the `competition' one. Also made by Gaco.

[edit] The cheap orange one has smaller `sipes' inside it and the lip and spring seem less heavy duty compared to the Gaco orange one..

For information only.

Karcraft now only stock the Payen (UK) oil seal as well as the Viton injected seal.

The Payen brand seal is the only "orange" seal that we now sell.

After many requests from our customers for a better clutch seal we resourced the seal from one of the world's most respected gasket manufacturers.

Their seal is very much like the old original BMC/BLMC/Leyland seal from 20 years ago.

Numerous specialists now use our seal with great success.

The new seal has a slightly higher tension on the gear.

All our engine gasket sets come with the new seal.

If the seal was purchased from us in the last 6 months you would have received the new seal in Payen packaging.

Part number 13H2934.

:D

Greg, the cheap ones I got from you previously were about 1 year ago.
The one that is here in MiniDave's gasket kit this week is indeed the Payen one you speak of.

[edit] my Kc printed cattledog is out of date and now the CD one is 90+ days old (so no worky)- I meant to grab one from you last week and forgot.

Hi Mike, have you progressed? I sometimes use a socket extension to tap the seal in. It has a flat end and you can tap the seal and keep working around until it sits flat and square to the cover
