Saw our one and only Mini so far - a rather tired and smoky Rover Mini taking off at the lights - heard it before I saw it as the box had a hole in it and it was very noisy. Very un-Japanese like。

I've been under the impression that old or smokey cars were illegal there?

My SIL spent a number of years teaching English in Japan. She has always said Japan is very consumerist and faddish. She furnished her flat with near new cast offs.

I was also told that Japan have very strict rules on aging cars which is an intent to force everyone into new cars. The mini (even the rover) is now pretty aged by Japanses values.

Up to number three today - in a parking lot of a small shopping centre. There are heaps of small 2 door Suzukis on the road - guess they have taken over fron the Mini

My host explained the car registration process to me today. Every two year they have to have the car inspected ( bit like a Blue Slip by the sound of it ) This test costs $1000 plus cost of repairs to restore the car to total new condition. So the older it gets the more repairs required so it is cheaper to buy a newer car every 2 to 4 years than maintain and old car.

After 9 days in Japan the total number of Minis seen was 8 - the last 4 been unregistered and on the premises of a repairer - I was told he was using them for parts. They were just down the road rod from our hosts place but she didn't tell me about them until the last day on the way to the station :(

Got some photos but if I had known about them earlier I might have asked if I could have salvaged something - carpets were good
