ok a bit more info. Dad pulled the sump plug out there are a heap of roller bearings floating around in the bottom of it. Dad says they are about as round as a spaghetti noodle and about 10mm long.

Now this leads to some other questions:

For quite a while, pretty much since he put the short motor on the box there has been a very lound whine. A mate or two said it was probably a nick in the gear causing the noise, and wasnt anything to really worry about.

also, could this have possible wrecked his whole motor, or more likely just clean it out, replace the box and shell be right mate??

Brenton

Sounds like maybe an idler gear bearing has collapsed, when this happens the rollers drop down to the sump plug.
But if the rollers are real short it's probably the mainshaft nose bearing gone.
Either way, I'd not drive it any more like that.

it could have wrecked the motor, or he could have gotten away with it - but you won't know till it's apart.

It's not hard or expensive to replace the rings, bearings & oil pump while the gearbox is off, so might as well do it - and clean the motor out while you're there.

If there's been an oil pressure problem, it's a fairly safe bet that the oil pump has crap go through it, and that's what feeds the bearings, so it's all gone through there too

ok motor was pulled out and was split. The idler bearing has given way. So in for a new gearbox case, the rest of the motor is fine though, bearings were checked and oil pump checked all still good.

What can cause an idler bearing to go?

Idler bearings can fail due to misalignment (due to fitting non-original flywheel housing onto the box) general wear, or perhaps waaaay too much endfloat.
When doing a full rebuild on old boxes I always replace them, they are cheap.

So could be adjusting the clutch way too far?

Maybe droping clutch??

My brother didnt do the second one, but the first one probably happened just before it broke :(

Oh and the low oil pressure was the oil relief valve thing being stuck

Probably a bit of crap from the gearbox.

Be very careful to make sure that the oil galleries don't have any more bits in them. Check the filter and the bypass valve in the filter.

The motor might be ok now but if a fragment gets in the wrong spot it could ruin the lot.

Absolutly, we are always harrassing him about something, and he never gets annoyed with us, absolute legend in my books.
