I've decided to just get my engine going till i can afford to get a 1275 but not sure how much i would be looking at cost wise. Can any one tell me roughly what a running 1275 would cost with gear box etc?
Thanks in advance :)

See my wanted advert. I have had a few responses and there is a huge range. Mini shops want anywhere between $3000 to $3700 for running but unknown engines. Private sellers want between $2200 and $3500 for incomplete through to fresh rebuilds with special parts. It is possible to get a front cut from Japan for about $4000 with bits you can sell to make the engine and box cheaper. I have a guy on the look out for a 1275 rusty jap mini with nice wheels, seats and other bits I can sell off to make the overall cost of the engine and box about $2000 to $2500. It is possible but a bit of a stuff around.

Looking at ebay, you can get a non-runner 1275 for less than $1000 and gearboxes in used condition for a few hundred. If you are handy you may be able to rebuild to stock spec for under $1000.

Like I have found though, prices vary in a huge range...

My colleague at work just spent $7000 having his race motor "freshened up"

I've never paid more than $100 for a running 1275, but have paid more than that for them in pieces

hi guys thanks for the replies. I was thinking about trying to rebuild one myself to standard but im still not quite 100% on all that sort of thing. but im sure that if it came to it i should be able to find some one to give me a hand. I am on a budget with the missus but i do have some wiggle room so basically the less it costs me i can spend more else where.
I would love to find one for $100 that would be awesome lol.
I guess it will just come down to what i can find in the end :)

I would not bet on a S/H one being any good, unless it's out of a Rover front cut I would budget for a rebuild.

As for prices- the cheapest 1275 I ever bought years ago was $200, and that had no head, pistons were seized and the gearbox (1100S) had 1st gear stripped.

Going prices I've found lately for S/H 1275 parts-
Blocks $300 up
Cranks $250 up (needing regrind- add $150) std size ones more. Crack test before buying!
Rods- 1100S big journal $100/set, Cooper S $200/set
Heads complete $200+
etc etc.
Cams- I paid $90 for a s/h Metro one

At least if you rebuild a motor you know it's all good.
I would be cautious about buying a shiny `rebuild' off eBay - people here have got burned bad by this.

The cheapest 1275 I've picked up was $250 - and it was wrapped in a Moke body with a full set of Sunrasia wheels worth $500

yeah, buying a 2nd hand motor and expecting it to last isn't a reality. It might last, or it might fail miserably.

Getting one built can be a lot cheaper than you expect.

Also talk to Josh @ miniimports

ahh.... good point, in that case, my cheapest running 1275 was also wrapped in a moke body, that was galvanised and had sunraysias - I'd swapped it for a weber that I had bought for $100 - but then I sold the moke on ebay for $5K

I do have a 1275 engine. Its actually out of a 1100s auto and its unconverted and is recently professionally rebuilt with .40 oversized pistons (1310). I also have the head that came of it.

If your interested PM me - there is an add in sales for this.

I'll have a look for the advert see if i can find it cheers :)
