The Body Prefix Code utilised by Leyland from January 1973 to April 1978 has the form of 022A2S2M10 which is for Leyland Mini S and 022X2S4M09 is for a Leyland Mini LS.
Does anyone have detail of what each number or letter signify?

022 = YDO22 = Mini Clubman > Leyland Mini S. (and SS, LS and Sunshine, they were just optioned or tarted up versions of the YDO22)
A & X = "Compliance Code" is what this digit is called by Leyland, I don't know what it actually means.
2S = 2 Door saloon.
1, 2, 3 and 4 = Trim level. The higher the number indicates the quality level. 1 is the cheap model, 2 is the normal, 3 was the Mini SS and 4 was the LS.
M = Manual transmission.
09 = 998cc

Anybody else able to throw any light on what the "A" and "X" stand for?

The Marina Manual says this digit calls it the "Compliance Status Code" and it says that A stands for Manual and B stands for Automatic. That is all it gives.

Hal Maloneys P76 book says that A for Manual and B for Auto up till April 1 1974 when it became D for Manual and E for Automatic.

I assume it is for ADR27A but I have no proof.

Minis from 73 came with an A up till around 1st April 74 then they changed to a D and in 77 they got an X.
Mokes from 73 came with a C and changed to an F in 1st April 74.
Vans came with an A and then changed to a G.

A = Manual. Mini, Marina, P76
B = Auto. Marina, P76
C = Manual. Moke
D = Manual. Mini, Marina, P76
E = Automatic. Marina, P76
F = Manual. Moke
G = Manual. Van
X = Manual. Mini
