I think my '68 build Cooper S should have a generator and I am not 100% sure if it would be a wise move but I would like to at least have the option of putting one back on for originality.

1. Is it correct to say the Cooper S generator has a bigger pulley?

2. Does anyone know the code number stamped on it?

3. If anyone had one what would it be worth?

4. Can they be fixed?
(I heard they can be converted to an alternator internally)

5. Does this change the polarity and mean you couldn't change back?
(I am going to put a new loom in.)

6. Would it be unwise to even do this?
(I don't have extra lights or even a radio)

Thanks for your advice.

1. Yes the Cooper S generator has a bigger pulley.
2. If nobody answers I can go out and look!
3. Don't know.
4. Yes they can be fixed. And they can also have an alternator built into them.
5. An alternator would mean it was negative earth. A generator can be switched from positive earth or negative quite easily in a few minutes.
6. I am sticking with a generator in my car. When it dies I will fit one of those alternators that look like a generator.

Take a look at this video to see about the alternator conversion...

Bubba,
All the Lucas generators on 850 Cooper, Mk1 S, Deluxe, van and early Matic are the same. But the Cooper and Cooper S only got a bigger pulley, so the innards didn't go ito orbit when you revved the tits off it. All Minis with the generator were positive earth.

Mini K all had an alternator, 15AC, negative earth.

The same generator with a bigger pulley.

If you do convert one into a an alternator type they usually run a smaller pulley to increase the revs a little.

Hey Jim

I don't think it would be unwise to run a generator. I have one on my daily driver and it is fine (and I do have radios, yes radios :D )

Cheers
Steve

Generators work fine on a daily, even with a couple of Hella spotties on the front.
Face it, nearly every English car had a generator up until 1969.

Quite correct. The pulley was the same as a B series Morris Oxcart, errr, Oxford but they had a larger crank pulley.

Jim,

This one's not too far away from you. Of course a call to Link, etc. would be worthwhile to check on availability and price from them.

According to my parts books and for what it's worth the following are the relevant parts numbers for the pulley:

Morris 850 - 12A34
Mini Deluxe - AYG9029 (this is an Australian part)
Cooper and S - 1H998

Also see these:

If your Mini has pretty much standard equipment, there is absolutely nothing wrong with a generator. Sure, technology has moved on, as it has in many ways. The whole Mini could be considered obsolete but still performs beautifully, just like a generator.

Without overstating the obvious, a generator is variable in the amount of current it produces. The more revs, the more current. An alternator pretty well produces a constant current regardless of revs.

The downfall of a generator is on those cold wet nights in heavy slow traffic where you have a number of electrical systems working. The radio/stereo, heater demister, headlights and windscreen wipers as well as spending two hours stuck in the traffic.

If you commonly face those sorts of conditions then an alternator built into the generator body would be a good investment.

Thanks for the replies everyone, very helpful. Yes, I saw that one winnabey but wasn't sure if it was the right type. I bought one a few years ago with the same idea in mind only to find it came off a triumph or some other car even though it was sold as a mini generator.

I'm feeling a little deflated because I just had a look and realised my pulley is of the small variety.

What are my chances of getting a pulley enlargement.
