Have you had any battery issues? It may solve them if you do. It would be interesting to see where the difference lies.
So, I have the pulley part number, what is the generator number so I get the right one?

The bigger pulley on the Cooper S was to stop over revving the generator at high engine revs. It was a racetrack thing and not needed for road use. (it is actually a liability for road use)
It will produce less power at low revs than a generator with the smaller pulley.

The part number for the generator is 62921027 according to the 1969 Mini parts book.
The part numbers for the pulley...
12A34 for the stock one fitted to the 850 and 998 Deluxe
1H998 for the 997, 998 Cooper and 1275 Cooper S one.

Well.... OK. But nobody laugh at my small pulley OK.

Seriously though Flute I haven't had any problems with my generator setup. As Morris1100 said the small pulley probably makes more sense for normal road use.

If you go with a generator it's important to check the regulator is operating correctly. A faulty regulator can damage the generator, battery or both.

... and that's what it is in the Lucas Australia parts book too, but marked as "Later Fitment - 1968/69". The original Cooper S generator 1964/68 in the book is 22742A/D, and 22704A/E for the 850, etc.

... and in one of the earlier Mini parts books (HYL 3262) it is BMC part number 22742 for the Cooper S and 22704 for the 850, etc.

So, given the different Lucas parts numbers on the same page of their catalogue I'd say the generator was upgraded to a common unit for all Minis during the life of the Mark 1 Cooper S.

Jim - if so, what is the date of your car and how much are you after originality?

For everyone else - how do you physically identify the three (apparently) different Mini generator models?

P.S. For Cooper S above also read Cooper (as per the Lucas and Mini parts books).

I just went out out the shed to see if I could make sense of the numbers on some of the generators that I have.
I discovered that my Cooper S does not have the correct generator. Unless all Cooper S's are fitted with the Lucas C39 made in 1952.
It also has a large diameter pressed metal pulley.

The other one was a C40 Lucas Australia Negative earth made in 1969. My guess is it was a replacement part for a EJ/EH Holden.

I will see if I can read the numbers on my Morris 1100 later.

Morris - the generator used on the Morris 1100 was the same as for the Mini 850, etc. - originally for 1964-67 was 22704E and 1968-69 was 62921027A. This is from both the Morris 1100 parts books PUB1013M and the Lucas book.

To me it looks like the short numbers like 22704E were UK sourced and the long numbers like 62921027A were Australian sourced.

The Very Early Mini 850 Was fitted with The C39 Generator, Cooper S Deluxe etc Were fitted With the C40 Generator The C39 Has a step in its Casing The C40 Does not,
Having said That
They seem to be making replacement C40"s With the step in the body now,
This was Not the case Back in the 60'S

So, John, if we lined up the various individual models of generator used on the Australian Minis until the introduction of the alternator how many would we have? Based on all I've said above I'm guessing two or three.

How are each uniquely identified externally? The part numbers are in the books but that may not be what's engraved on the body. Maybe people could post some pictures if they are reasonably sure of what car theirs was originally fitted to?

OK well I'll start...mine has a Generator that appears to be dated 5 64 so not the cars original but seems to match most of one of the part nos. you mentioned earlier.

It's marked....

LUCAS

62921 12 A 5 64

C 40 L 12V

Thanks for posting the pic (it looks very nice too!) and for the replies. I will see what I can find. There must have been a lot taken off but probably thrown away too. I might be lucky to find one one with a '68 date on it.

I would think it would be very rare for cars from this period to still have their original generator if they had been in regular use.

If you had a problem with your generator it would just be exchanged for a reconditioned one to get you back on the road.

Good luck!

My Morris 1100 and the 1100 auto I just sold both have the original generators.

If I hadn't mounted the coil over the numbers on my 1100 I would have posted the numbers.

The C39 that was on my Cooper S motor (that I didn't realize was wrong till I looked at the numbers this week!) There is four layers of paint including green under the blue, under the silver, under the red.

Image

The C40 that was on my first Morris 1100S in the early 80s and has been in storage since 83, I think it was for a Holden...
