just wanted to hear some your experiences in regards to engine swaps in your minis. i haven't been able to find any good detailed stuff on the net, so I'm going to give Vicroads a call soon, but i want to know if anyone has any any trouble with them not allowing a swap? my 998 is kaput and ive got a rebuilt 1100 waiting to go in. Reckon i would have any trouble from Vicroads?

Hi Jim,

as far as i know, if you change the engine (eg the size) you need an engineer's certificate. but we all know the cars can handle an 1100 so you should have no problems!

I had trouble here in NSW once with a swap from a 998 (in 1978 Clubby) to a reconditioned 1098.
The inspection station's anal #1 objected that the new' motor was 3 or 4 years older than the original. I told him so we were just arguing about the block number prefix really, he wouldn't budge, I said F it and went to another shop.

No idea if this `no older than original' rule applies or is enforced in Vic. But I doubt you would need an `engineers certificate' down there for a 998>1098 swap- they are the same damned block! Also as 998s and 1098s were used in the same bodies with the same brakes, both roundy and Clubby.

You should not have any problems.
All you need to do is take the receipt for the engine down to vicroads and fill in the paper work for a change of engine number.
They will visually check the engine number and issue you with a new rego label.
You don't require an engineers certificate as an 1100 was 'optional' for the mini.
The vicroads website explains what you need to do. Have a look under the heading "Change of engine"

How can it be rusty when it's covered in so much oil?

I'm building a clubby with a cooper s 1275 so i have been doing some homework. What i have found is you can put whatever you want on your car as long as it was offerd by the factory.

You'll be fine to do that on your p's cos the 998 and 1100 are the same motor just different crank basically. No stress there at all =)

that's all you need to know...

no engineers certificate, just disk brakes if you're going to a 1275

Yer because all 1275s in aus had disc brakes
