Interesting info Flute - does anyone have an experience of claims with Lumley?

To be honest I was put off them after the mini expo at the showgrounds last year - I provided my info and was told I'd get a call back to quote on the fleet - no one ever called..... when I followed up a couple of months later to check their prices against my renewal from Shannons the person I got on the phone baulked at discussing 7 cars and said I should call back another time - I never bothered.

I suspect Shannons aren't the cheapest but we've had 2 car claims with them and am in the middle of a claim for total loss on a house fire and I can't fault their approach to my claims so far - that's worth more than a few dollars when you're a bit stressed out I reckon.

Re Lumley- they handle Coles Insurance claims so they say. I hope they are more on the ball with their Classic Insurance....

I tried to insure our Mini with them a few year ago, but they wouldn't deal with me because the car was in my wifes name. I tried to tell them we were married and that I delt with the car side of things and that dealing with my wife would be hopeless because she doesn't know anything about it. But they refused to deal with me because I wasn't the registered owner of the vehicle.
How would I pre-insure a car that i was about to buy then?
Maybe I just got someone being difficult. I have since tried to insure through their website but it won't insure my Mini for the going rate. So I have given up with them!

2 solutions:
1. you have a conference call between insurer, yourself and your wife to answer their questions, or,
2. you transfer the car over to the other person. In victoria, you can transfer car between spouses without needing a roady or any of that other crap.

3. Call them back and ask to speak to a supervisor.

From what I have seen with various threads about Shannons over the years is that every now and then they seem to get someone on the phone that is not helpful and knows very little about car insurance.
A second call to a different person seem to clear up any problems but by then they might have lost the customer.

i actually had someone different from shannons call ME back the next day to arrange a policy after being rejected by some muppet the first time!
never had a problem since

I've had three claims with Shannons in the twelve or so years I've insured with them. Each time no issues and very happy with their service.

Shannons also do pay by the month at no extra cost. Lumley's do not do pay by the month at all.

I tried to get a quote from Lumleys on the Corona Coupe as a toe in the water exercise, and they wanted me to send them photos and a full list of mods as proof that it was worth what I wanted to insure it for. I told them Shannons insured it for the same amount without all those requirements and the girl said she'd have someone call me to discuss it. I never received a call back.

I must admit, I put my name down at the Lumleys tent at the Bendigo Swap Meet and wasn't too impressed when no one called back but I chased them up and signed up when I saw the savings and added value to my mini. I was happy with a claim with Shannons once and hope I never have to find out what a claim is like with Lumleys. They are owned by Wesfarmers who also own Coles Insurance which they told me is a separate side company but Lumleys don't do house insurance and point you to Coles. I hope the competition is healthy and not just them trying to force Shannons out with lower prices and then put it up later.

Maybe you're right, perhaps I got a muppet on the phone. I have since tried on their website and from what I remember I think they still ask the 'Are you the registered owner' question. I seem to remember it didn't like my valuation of my Mini either. When I need insurance on the Mini I might give them a call. I've been with SGIC insurance for years now for everything and they have always been brilliant. Claim wise they were brilliant too. So I'm in two minds still, Shannons or SGIC classic

I have been a bit disappointed with Shannons, although I've been with them for 5 years, and the price and joint cover for 'special' cars and the family car and our house as well is pretty good. Ok I have not shopped around for some time.

But early Dec I made my first claim (hopefully last) for theft from my car in my driveway when I went inside for 2 minutes to get some more stuff.

They have really taken some time, they started by telling us not to replace anything they will supply the replacements and then a week later when I hassled them they said well why haven't you supplied us receipts for the replacement stuff! Then they 'overlooked our claim' just before Christmas break so now I'm still waiting for any payment.
Even worse, they have a new system, the Perth office now looks after claims from WA, SA and Tassy WTF! Bad planning when you try to call them in business hours...

So I've been ringing them every second day to chase them up, yesterday (9 am WA time) I was told all the replacement quotes would be finalized 'today' and I'd get a phone call back to confirm, still waiting for the call...

Shannons are great. I had to claim in a replacement windscreen on my WRX that was kicked in by vandals. They sorted it all out, and sent obriens out to my house. I wasn't happy with the screen that was put in, which wasn't Shannons fault (rippely and didn't have the tinting at the top). I called Shannons and told them what the go was, and they told me they guarantee all repairs for life so then sorted it out with obriens and I had another new one put in. All happened really fast, and I wasn't out of pocket one cent.

To be fair to Shannons and any other organisation, they are only as good as the people they employ and if you get slacker or a learner on the phone then it reflects unfairly on the whole organisation when its really only the fault of one or two individuals.

Gee try dealing the Dept Veterans Affairs or Centrelink. If its not on the first couple of pages on their computer screen then it doesn't happen.
