Second digit was dropped from my `70 `Matic, it is YA2S5 13**
the same prefix was on my 1969 matic, since sold.
All the compliance plates I've seen on 70-71 roundys had the 2nd digit dropped.

My K book is PUB 1038 (final), whatever that means...

Inside cover actually says:

Morris Mini K RHD [vacant space]
Morris " " " LHD YMG2S4-L
Austin " " " RHD YAG2S4
Austin " " " LHD YAG2S4-L

Engine prefix [common] is 10YJ/U/H

So says the book, but Leyland have been wrong before. Look at the errors in their `black book' workshop manual.

The only PUB 1038's I've seen have Final as their version, and you are right about the errors in many BMC publications. For example, the parts catalogue for the Mk II series PUB1056M doesn't even mention an alternator, just a generator.

Mini King's catalogue says YAG2S4 for a Morris Mini K van, and YG2S1 for a Morris Mini K Sedan. 10YCTAH engine prefix for the Sedan and 10YJUH for the Van. Your Matic prefix of YA2S5 isn't listed in John's book.

Back to the original question, if the 'boat' has body prefix YG2S4 and the angled brace it looks like a MK II S body to me. I wonder if there's a hole for the fuel pump breather under the back seat? If it is a MK II S that should make it a bit quicker in the water, yeah?

Don't you just love BMC and their attention to detail in their various publications? Clearly didn't spend much money on Quality Management System consulting! I have all the Australian Mini parts books in my collection and you can see where updates to parts in a particular book are simply lost in the next version.

I used to regularly buy parts from both J E Allen at Dural and Lancaster Motors in Parramatta, back in the 60s. Both BMC dealers.
Even back then the alterations scrawled into their parts books had to be seen to be believed.

They were the "good old days" when the same guys worked behind the parts counter for decades and generally knew the more common part number and its bin location off the top of their head. I used Kellow Falkiner in Melbourne city and Lapco in South Melbourne and it was heartening to see the same faces each time I went in.

Beat you. :P That was my cryptic clue that what the numbers were.

The numbers are Mk2 Cooper S. The angled brace is a clue in that direction but the missing filler is a clue in the other direction.
Maybe it is a cut and shut.

Might be an ex-Mini King converted Cooper S? Didn't John used to revert Coopers to Mini K standard at one stage because of the cheaper insurance for the owners?

The boot and bonnet drip rail would tell a story and decide if its a cut and shut or a forgotten Cooper.

I read it on a toilet wall, but I've transcribed it below. I can't see where I got Mini King from, but I'm sure it was up here somewhere. Use the search and have a look around.

Quote:
Roumours continue regarding the changing of used S's back to Mini K and flogging off the S parts for better prices than the whole car!!!!! Then mooving the car on as a MIni K.
Word is that this happend to a number of S's originally owned by NSW police
I know of two MiniKs with bodies that have all the correct S bits on them. Fuel pump breather grommet: correct spot welded tabs for the fuel breather pipes : correct strap mounting for RH fuel tank: numbers on the rain channel and the radiator shroud were both there but there has been an attempt to remove them. All the other identifying bits were there but these could have been added at some stage although they dont look as if they have. Both the cars I know of have drilled holes where clearly a sun shade had been fitted

Following is from great Police Minis article by Watto in The Mini Experience.

John Smidt of The Mini King, remembers when he owned Mini Kingdom he frequently bought ex-police Cooper S from the public auctions. “They usually had about ten a week. They might not have sold them all, but there were always about that number for sale. The problem was, you couldn’t sell a Cooper S then, because it was too hard to get insurance. I used to buy them, pull the engines out, pull all the Cooper S bits off, the brakes, right-hand tank, that sort of thing, and fix them up, throw an 1100 engine in and sell them as a Mini K.”
“The irony is, I couldn’t sell the Cooper S, but I could easily sell a Cooper S engine, and the brakes and everything else. I made more money changing them over to Mini K’s and selling all the Cooper S bits separately. I probably did that to at least 100 of them.”

Try as I might, I can't see the apology in that?

Well we have finished the raft, even went to Kmart ( local Tip) and a minivan seat was being thrown out ( along with the van) and fitted perfectly, so we now have a front seat!

We have also painted it Green and White Roof and White bonnet stripes, Painted some mag wheels onto the drums....

I believe the proper Mini K number is YG2S1. That's what mine is.

Well done and well played. Some people here deserved it!
I figured you were up to something so I didn't want to jump right in when you first posted the numbers.
