Hi all,

What do you guys recommend looking out for when inspecting a moke. Going to have a look at one tomorrow.

Where are the rust prone spots?

Where the floor meets the side, it will rust out

Front subframe mounts in the floor also rust out

Check the battery box thoroughly, it rusts out quickly - Also check inside all the side boxes

Check the seats aren't held in with zip ties, that's another common Moke trait

Where the rear subframe mounts to the car, at the front of the wheel arch, check there for big holes too

1) The floor. The whole main floor rusts.
2) The Bermuda Triangle! Where the floor joins the side box has a hidden triangular box section/water trap and it will rust inside the box.
3) The outer floors inside the side boxes.
4) The battery box and battery mount.
5) Base of the firewall where it meets the floor.
6) Double skinned panels where the windscreen mounts.
7) Where the front end of rear subframe mounts to the body.
8 ) Any bits of metal that are not on the above list.

The late model so-called `galvanized' Mokes rust too, it just takes longer to start.

What year did the galvanized bodies start?

Just keep in mind, that when you are looking at this Moke that it is possible 20/30 years plus old :)

So what you're basically saying is, if it's made of metal, it's prone to rust. :P

yep...that's it..metal = rust :D
but it's not that bad...battery box and floors,
you cant hide much on a moke... and just bring a magnet

Thanks for all the advice, Im having a look this afternoon so will let you know how it goes. Based on discussions with the owner so far, it sounds like it is in decent condition but ill see.

A family member is looking to buy it and he is pretty keen if it is in decent nick

Well this particular Moke turned out to be a bit rough. Original paint had been painted over without being stripped down and engine bay was still in original paint.

Fair bit of rust on the surfaces too. Windscreen frame and dash were covered in rust and most parts like clutch cover and other surfaces in engine bay also rusted. Hadnt been looked after for quite a while. Could have potential if you got it cheap and stripped it right back but not for the money the owner was after.

Not quite what we were looking for. Thanks for the advice above, the search will continue

I wouldn't say so.
I see outrageous prices (as well as bargains) all the way through the year without much fluctuation.

Surface rust? Sounds like you're on to a winner! :)
You can take the dash out in 30 minutes. Hit it with a rattle can and bobs your uncle.
As Adam said its Moke silly season. . You pay double in the summer compared to winter. There is an “original condition dash on Ebay now for $250
Re-spray without the old paint being stripped back? It's a moke not an E Type Jag. I'd say 70% of re-sprayed minis and mokes still have the original paint under them. Mine has. Mokes where the cheapest cars available new so it’s only until recently when the trendy’s and cashed up baby boomers have started buying them that they have had vast amounts of cash thrown at them. Any moke under $8k is gona look pretty shabby.
When I got mine it had a lumpy lead paint, brushed on dash. Different colour non rubbed back re-spray and an engine bay in 3 different colours. I couldn't part with my money quick enough as it had no rust in the floors and it was straight. :lol:
