Most of the NSW police minis were bought under government tender and supplied by various distributors.

At the time of the minis the government garages were in full operation. These were based down near the now defunct Harold Park raceway in Sydney and did many of the fitouts and certainly the majority of the servicing and repairs.

Exceptions would have been rural and regional based cars where a local BMC dealer could perform basic servicing. However, major work was performed at the government garages complexs.

I am unsure where the specification work was done - things like the right cams etc - the factory or at the government garages but certainly radios. lights etc were fitted at the Harold Park complex. Essential repairs were done there.

About circa 1967 I was given a cluster gear that was taken from a pursuit car that had only 1500 miles on it and had ripped the gearbox apart when the drivr attempted to chase a motor cyclist through a grassy paddock and had it a hidden stump at speed.

and wasn't there an Ausmini thread a year or so ago...

EDIT ... perhaps I'm thinking of this one...

you could always call up larke.. There is bound to be an old sticker laying around..

I don't think they would be laying around. They are not in the same locations as they were when the sold BMC cars.
Their Rosebery site is the old Lucas factory almost next to the BMC plant at Zetland.
Larke Hoskins was the Sydney Austin importer in the early days, they set up an assembly plant at Enfield to assemble Austins which later became PMC (Pressed Metal Corporation) and then eventually taken over by BMC. This is the plant that the Minis were built in from 75 to 78.
Larke Hoskins was a very important part of the BMC story.

I remember they had a dealership in Kiora Rd. Miranda. I remember going up there with my Dad to check out the P76 when it was released. Got parts from there too.

The 1966 dealer list shows them at Sydney, Homebush, Parramatta, Sutherland, Tamworth and Canberra.

Was thinking surely my memory can't be that bad (although I was only 11 years old) so I went searching and stumbled on this, which is interesting in itself... A Leyland ad re the London Sydney Rally.

... anyway Larke Hoskins Miranda is Listed as a Mini Dealership at the bottom of the ad. I know this is 77 but I'm sure they were a Leyland dealer earlier. Maybe someone can confirm this.

Mike

The cars came off the Zetland production line with the performance and safety features fitted - SPO41 in the case of the MK II S. As you say, the Police items (radio, siren, fire extinguisher, cig lighter socket, ID plate, fire axe, etc.) were done at the GMG in Glebe. Mechanical maintenance on the STP Cooper S's was carried out in the North Sydney workshop, at least for some cars.

The BMC dealers list from 66 didn't give an address, only the suburb.

I am told that Tynan motors at Sutherland used to be a B.M.C. dealer at one stage , it may have been a Total garage ?

You could do what MCM did and take a picture of the sticker,
Play with it in photoshop and send it off to get it properly printed.

Thanks. I did some more searching and the Tynans site at 642 princes highway sutherland was Larke Hoskins. I guess they must have moved in late 60's or had two locations.

This ad is 1962.

Anyway this thread has gone a little off track, I've also always been interested in getting a repro dealer sticker done.

Who has had it done and what's involved?? Could you do it yourself if you had the right medium to print on??

It's all interesting information.

Be good to see a photo of the small dealer sticker that was put on from the inside . I remember seeing one at Oz 50 at Zetland. It was a clear background . I did take some shots but have no idea where they have ended up. Anyone else seen this one?
Graham do you have one on a car?
