It is a june 68 starter, But remember a June 68 car would have a starter that was produced before June 68.

The Lucas factory in Sydney was 100 yards up the same street as the BMC Zetland factory.
So there would have been very little difference between the starter date and the car production date.

I just had a look at my starters...

62925008B 8 66 M35G 12V Made in Australia (original starter off my 66 Morris 1100)
62925008B 2 67 M35G 12V Made in Australia (the current starter on my Cooper S, it has Morris 1100 coloured paint  )
62925008B 6 68 M35G 12V Made in Australia (off a Morris 1100 by the paint colour)
62925048B 6 69 M35G Made in Australia
62925048A 4 70 M35G Made in Australia
25083B M35G 1 8 62 Made in England

Were these made in batches? Or will you get a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th month 1970 starter? I seem to always see these round numbers as above is why I ask.

Yeah I know thanks. It's a spare one I've picked up but it's a lot closer to the right date than the one on the car now which is years out..

How can I test if the starter works. I touched some jumper leads to it but it just seems to short out.

Also what is an acceptable endplay amount, last time I had the one on my car out it seemed to have quite a bit and it tends to slip out of drive sometimes when starting. Thought that could be the reason.

that's how I test them - if it doesn't spin when connected to a battery, I take that as a bad sign

I look at the side of the starter, if it says Lucas I stick it in a crate with all the others and fit one off a Gemini.

took me YEARS to figure that one out!

I think I have 7 starter motors, all either dead or with shattered bendixes, I'll make a good one out of them all one day.

Out of that list of seven that I posted earlier, only one of them works.

I have about 4? Lucas ones that have all shat a tooth off the bendix.
20° static advance does that... but this motor needs it. :P
One of em pierced the flywheel housing breather boss at Wakefield Pk, so I drove all the way home with a wet clutch. Had 1/2 L or so of oil in there. Didn't slip, the takeup was nice and smooth though!

I still run a Lucas starter, but these days with a kill switch on the ign. Spin `er up then throw the switch on. No more busted bendixes.
