As asked above, has anynone ever removed the 1/4 vent window and changed it to a full length 1 piece window?

Why for something different, and i think it looks better sometimes

Not really on two counts.
1. it happened in 67, and
2. since the british cars (with the exceptions of radford, etc) never had quarter windows, the factory didn't 'convert' it.

umm ok...... im lost

So the brittish did it yes, but i think when they did away with the sliding windows they also incorporated internal door hinges. Also their winding mechanism is totally different to ours (i believe)

So harley you got some earlry brittish leyland (pommy) doors and pulled the windows out and inserted them into your doors. How did you fix the winding mechanism and ensure the glass went up straight?

Do you have any pictures on how you did it?

Thanks

I don't have any pics because there's nothing to see thats of use. The conversion was a complete and utter PITA that took over two years of playing around with a spare door to get right, however I did go the whole hog and have central locking and electric windows too in the 'prototype'. Turned out to be a far bigger challenge than I first thought because an Aussie door is so much smaller internally than a rover door.

Basically there are no standad components in my doors. Nothing. All the push / pull rods, cranks, levers, bearings and springs are either new, modified or gone altogether. Everything including the glass, which is held straight and guided by an extra track inside the door.

My suggestion to anyone thinking of doing it who isnt up for a good mechanical challenge: take the easy way out and just paint your 1/4 window frames black and tint your glass. :D

Thankyou for your reply Harley

1. nup, if you reckon that's true then prove it - windup windows were introduced on the MK3 in March 1970. UK MK2's retained sliding windows
2. yeah, OK... :P

but 1/4 vent windows are awesome anyway

The mk3 mini was october 1969 by my information here, however the doors in question first appeared in October 1966, on the Mk3 Elf and Hornet.

The wind ups were a luxury feature of the upmarket cars, later adopted to be standard.

I didn't know that about elfs and hornets - do they share the same doors as a MK3 - IE will a late model Rover door fit?

Parnell and another couple of my books say March '70 for 'normal' MK3s...

A rover door would fit an Elf, its the same.

NG: quarter windows into your rover won't happen. Here's the simple measurement:
measure the vertical height of the glass on your two cars. Aussie cars have 12 inches of glass / window height, rovers are closer to 13.5.
An aussie quarter window would need a 1 inch spacer between it and the door.
