I got fined for possessing something that "purporting to be a number plate"
I have the QLD registration MINI ( And COOPER S)
many years ago, PPQ made the plates too thick for minis rear boot lid. and was told go and get one made... provided I have my Registration and the letters QLD i would be fine... Well 10 years later, 2 speeding fines later ( Both issued by Qld Transport, and I inquired that there was no issues, and according to them cause they were able to issue the fine, no problems re plate.....

On the Mini Sunny coast 50 week away, the village people cop pulled me up and fined me $230....about the plate :( :( :( :( :(

Nope.... was just thinking that the cardigan-brigade can't report you to the RTA if you don't display your real number plate at car shows

TBH, if you've got something to hide you shouldn't be on the road.

(Edit: then again, if they're stickin their head under the bonnet lookin for mods, they can always take your body number...)

The old historic rego scheme in NSW was almost shut down because a number of clubs were permitting their members very modified cars to be registered under that scheme. Also a number of people who had historic rego would just use the car as normal daily transport, which is not permitted.

Since it was so close to being shut down altogether and was revised in a major way, there are many members of the classic car fraternity who will report modified cars on historic rego in the interests of ensuring that the scheme remains available for use. It is worth remembering that historic rego is a privilege and not a right. Abuse of privileges has been known to have them revoked.

For that matter, registration of a car is also a privilege and it can be revoked if the car is not legal.

Fair enough.

If someone - ANYONE, police, rego authority, joe public - reports your car as being illegally modified, then you have to prove that any modifications are legal by whatever process is in your state.

This is easy if any of your modifications are done under an engineering certificate. Keep it with the car, keep a couple of copies handy just in case, DISPLAY the certificate (or copy) at any show you may be involved with. This will help prevent the subject member of the public sending in any photos.

If your modifications are legally permitted owner modifications, then you have to ensure that you fully understand the laws in your state pertaining to those modifications. We at ausmini have put a handy

LINK to help you do this. Please read the information in the links for your own benefit, and the benefit of others. If you have legally permitted owner modifications and you are at a show, display a card describing the modifications with reference to the laws in the link to show that you know what you are doing.

If you display your car with modifications done just for the show, like over size wheels, make sure that you state that they are just for the show (might not be good for judging though).

These are just my thoughts and I am not a lawyer, but I try to help

cheers
michael

It just seems a shame to me to have to 'justify' your vehicle at a car show.

If people start to worry that they're going to have their registration cancelled just by displaying their car at a car show, I fear the car shows won't be worth going to... because there won't be any cars!

Could these illegal modifications include having to cut a hole in the bonnet of the round nose mini in order to make an elder crossflow cylinder head fit under the bonnet ?

In what context ?? On a full registration or on historic club plates ???

On a full registration I dont know but on a historic club plates then yes it is a problem. The controlling body (NSW) for historic clubs has issued a number of bulletins and statements about modified cars.

Minor modifications generally get a blind eye by the clubs plate registrars but major modifications are a major no no particularly when they are visually obvious.

For example on a Torana GTR - fitting a 202 motor to a torrie previously fitted with a 186 motor is technically wrong but would get a blind eye turned to it on the basis of availability of motors all this time later. However a Torana with a V8 fitted is too far past the common sense application of the regulations.

Technically the cars are supposed to be original.

Prevention is far better than a cure is the idea with that. If you have a legally modified car, then you have nothing to"worry" about anyway.

More important to know the rules and how you have complied with them, than get annoyed, frustrated, etc about someone complaining that they "think" you might have done something illegal.

cheers

&,,,, it`s all good & well to have the cops & RTA start harassing you & making you take your car to them to have it inspected & all the dramas & worry & frustration & cost that goes with it,,, only to have them clear your car with no faults, , , Just because some dIkkkHheadddd dobbed you in for what he/she "ASS-Umed" was an illegal mod/part done/fitted to your car, when it wasn`t.

hey???

good on all you dorks who are doin it,,, good on you,,, i hope you all feel so good about what you`re doing , in all your self righteous know-it-all minds , ASSuming you know all about the rules & regs & what is right & what is wrong on our lovely little minis... Good for you... & i hope the lice from a thousand camels make love in your bowels & breed like wildfire & eat their way out,,, whoever you are@!!!!!!!
