Not my work. I believe it belongs to GtiMini. It's a gti conversion but the principal is the same.

ah, i has similar thoughts about using a universal joint freom a socket set... I am not game to try it on my car without some sort of proof of working first though....

I still use it a fair bit on the road....

Bent rod will not work with rod change! remember the rod has to rotate along its axis, having a bend in it just wont work... you will need a uni joint or something similar. Its common practice on race cars, more for the purpose of raising the gearshift into the 'ultimate' position, right up next to the steering wheel, sorta like in the V8 supercars, half the WRC cars etc. I have read about it in a pommie book about this guy racing in the mini miglia class. From memory they just shortened the stabiliser bar or lengthened the selector rod- either of the two, and then angled it up a bit. i think the collar on the end can deal with a bit of an angle, if not just adapt a small uni joint- possibly from a socket set, steering coloum etc.

P.S. James, i agree theres nothing wrong with a sorted rod box, and i would guess the rod change setup overall would be a fair bit lighter- i just disassembled a remote box on the weekend... selector arrangement inside the rod 'box is lighter and more efficient, less parts, and also no big alloy extension. I dont see whats so bad about them

I used to build Formula Vees back in the early `70s, yes we used socket U/Js, they were OK for that.
These days better U/Js are available for more $$. I don't think a rose joint will work here, as you need a twist motion.

There are various small uni joints available from Coventrys, Blackwoods, Associated World Bearings and similar industrial suppliers. Not too pricey, and are available in threaded configuration for ease of installation/adjustment. Steering uni joints are generally way too big unless sourced from Suzuki Alto or similar "Kei" class jap wreck.

If anyone can post some pics of ANY cars with these mods (including the V8 Supercars), I'd much appreciate it.

Even after shortening the shift, theSubie gear change is a long way back...
Damn you Thomas (nuclear_mini) for putting this idea in my head

You didn't work on a vee called the MJM Roadrunner did you? (Driven by Maurie Miller, Graham Engel and Michael Trueman) I have this car in my shed.
One gearchange uni is a Sidchrome and the other is an ETC. They wear out very quickly so you wrap them with tape to take the slack out of them!

Nope, I worked on Damon Beck's, Frank Kleinig's and many others whose owners' names escape me now.
I worked at Adams Automotive in Asquith.
People would go bend their cars in practice on the Sat, we would work 1/2 the night fixing busted suspension arms etc so they could race Sunday.

I'm still interested if anyone has any pics?
The V8 supercars were in Perth this weekend & I got offered free pit passes :)
Thought I might get a look at a professional setup first hand...
But I couldn't go due to family commitments

How is Damon? He has not been well during the last year but when I was talking to him late last year he was much better. He is one of the nicest blokes you could ever meet.
