Somebody must have done it before, but I thought I'd have a go at adapting an old Mini gearbox casing as a novel and appropriate letterbox for our property.
All the internal webs were removed, a letter-slot cut into the bottom and aluminium plates made up to cover the openings. The top of the gearbox is now the back of the letterbox and is hinged to lift up. It even locks with a bonnet pin.
The left side cover rotates to allow rolled-up mail such as magazines to be posted.

I don't think it would be an economical undertaking, I could do a complete gearbox rebuild in the time it's taken to make this.

There's someone in berowra with a huffing big engine for a mail box - Looks like an aeroplane engine.

And then Alpine Moke's squashed 850 cube letterbox

My mate near Mudgee has a letterbox welded on top of a `straight 8' Mini crankshaft... 2x 850 ones welded together. :P

Cool stuff.

I want to use a chopped down Mini front as a letterbox with the letter slot in the grille.

When we eventually move to acreage I will do it. :)

The letterbox is now firmly planted in situ, let's hope the mailman can work out how to use it
