This is contrary to my experiences.

All of my minis read extremely accurately, much better than my modern vehicles do.

I agree, my 200KMH Cooper S speedo reads spot on (to my GPS) from 50-110KMH with the 3.44 diff in and 165/70-10 A008s.
Even with a (wrong, but current) 3.647 diff it's not nearly as far out as my AUII Falcon is (that reads 10KMH high @ 110 actual).

So do you reckon that my speedo won't be out that much on my 1275cc engine? As I don't know what the gear ratio is.

Rich

I don't know what gearbox is in your car, or what year the car is.
Speedo will read fine if the diff is a 3.44 (which is what most rodchange boxes had, Mokes excepted).
Most folks here that fit a 1275 stick a 3.44 diff in, if it doeasn't have one already fitted.

While the odometer is driven by gears - and so needs the correct gears (or a conversion box) to read correctly, the speedo is calibrated by altering the distance between the driven and "receptor" (my word) plates.

So any competent instrument shop can calibrate the speedo.... (something beyond the capabilities of most modern cars).

Cheers, Ian

It's a 1975 Clubman with a 1275 engine , would the engine number help identify what the gear ratio is?

No.
My bet is it is a 3.44, these were used on most rodchange boxes in Minis here, both 998 and 1275.

O.k so with the harness adapter plugged in this is how I think it is wired up..

Indicators - green/white striped , green/red striped cable

Highbeam - light blue/white , black

Orange light - red/green , black (both sides)

Ignition - white , red/green

Fuel - green (going from fuel to voltage stabilizer in "I" slot , green/black

now in the voltage stabilizer I am unsure what goes in the remaining "I" and "B" terminals. If somebody can check the photos and let me know that would be awesome.

Green wire from bottom fuse went to B.
Another wire green/black? goes from `I' to the temp gauge, if fitted.

I have the green/black going to the fuel gauge is this correct? As the opposite terminal from fuel gauge goes from there to the "I" terminal in green (this link cable was already there when I bought the clock).

Green wire from bottom fuse - is that any green wire from fuse box?

o.k so as the set up as it is I have these remaining wires

4 x green wire

1 x green/blue wire

2 x black joined together - guessing this is an earth

1 x white wire - ignition related?

2 x red/green , black wires going into 2 x bulb holders - guessing these would go to the water temp and other gauge for lighting when in centre clock binnicle set up.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

any help with these?

All green wires come from the bottom fuse, they are live when ignition is on.
Use the shortest green one to B. There should also be a long one goes to the wiper motor connector (NOT the wiper switch).
Yes earth the 2 black ones under the dash.

o.k so green from fuse box to B so in total I have 2 cables in voltage stabilizer, a green in B going to bottom fuse and a green from I linking to the fuel guage.

looked in the mini book and green/blue goes to water temp transmmiter.

I do still have an extra white wire left, where would that go or would I not need it?

There is a white goes to ignition switch (I'm looking at Mini K & Mk2 Cooper S diagram).
The only other white near there goes from bottom fuse (other end to the greens) to SU fuel pump (Cooper S only).
You might have to get a multimeter and chase where the other end is...

Cheers Dr, well the plan is that these wires should be a straight swap when I cut and crimp them to the old wiring then everything should be hunky dory!

Unless i'm missing something i'm hoping that it should go smoothley and then add my other gauges later.
